Anakin Skywalker (aka, Darth Vader) from "Star Wars"

or

John Locke, one of the main characters from "Lost"

Ive been watching the Lost series, and I'm up to the 6th and final season. If you know the show, you understand that John Locke's character is one of the best, and one of the more tragic characters ever put on film. The same can be said about Anakin Skywalker from Star Wars, because we all know the overall story is about Anakin when in context of all 6 movies.

Both character start out as good people, but eventually become these sorts of evil incarnates (Skywalker metaphorically "dies" and becomes Darth Vader, and Locke actually dies and becomes The Man In Black in Locke's body), which adds to the tragedy, as they becomes the main antagonists of their respective stories.

So my question is: Who has the more tragic story arc? Why?

If someone doesn't know Anakin Skywalker becomes Darth Vader, they must have been living in Antarctica for the last 35 years

My 7 and 4 year old nephews don't know.  A good thing that they're not on PA.  I haven't watched any of Lost yet, although I did by 4 seasons on DVD when I found them dirt cheap.  I guess there is no reason for me to watch them anymore. LOL

You mean to not watch them anymore?

I highly recommend you start watching Lost.
You bought the first 4 seasons?

Best thing to do is just start from the beginning.
The Pilot episode is one of the best episodes, but
I feel that the show gets even better as the series goes on.
Seasons 4, 5, and 6 are some of the best TV you
could ever watch. Season 1 and 2 are also fascinating.

I have a bad habit of buying DVDs when I find them for good deals but never getting around to watching them.  It is pretty sad.

I haven't watched Lost.

Anakin Skywalker would be a good answer but I feel like his character is not really tragic. He's such a DICK. Do you ever actually WATCH and pay heavy attention to the Revenge of the Sith? Anakin makes me so angry and makes all these horrible horrible decisions. I don't really understand what it is like to be under the influence of the dark side, but I feel like he could be a BIT stronger than that. He's so obsessed with saving his lady, but he doesnt seem to give 2 monkey dumps about her. He is a selfish prick. At the same time, he's completely a JERK to Obi-Wan despite spending so much time with him. Really? Your BEST FRIEND and mentor that has raised you to be the best person you can be suddenly means nothing when you think you deserve to be a Jedi Master. That's like me learning guitar from Robert Fripp and before I'm even done learning I go "FRIPP NOW LET ME PLAY IN KING CRIMSON. I AM GOOD ENOUGH." -"No you're not, you have much to learn. Remember, I'm very old and been doing this for longer than you have been alive." - "NO ROBERT I DONT CARE I"M SO GOOD THAT I"M GOING TO KILL EVERYONE YOU LOVE."

And then after they turn him into Darth Vader, after he screams NOOOOO and realizes his mistakes he decides to kill the Emporer for deceiving him because Darth Vader is so amazing and badass? NO. He CONTINUES taking orders from the guy. The only truly tragic thing about his character is how worthless he is.

I have something to say about Lost but since you are not done watching.... I won't.
Lost Is available for free if you have Amazon Prime btw...

I voted for John Locke. He really tries and has good intentions but in the end just fails. He is punished for trying, punished for being good and punished for failing. And the WORST and most tragic part.... all of his endeavors from the start are utterly meaningless and he never learns why.

Vader gets no love because as Smurph pointed out he knew exactly what was happening and chose his role in it. That's just not tragic.

I vote for John Locke. I was always interested in the idea of Tabula Rasa in high school. Wait, what the hell is Lost?

I thought we were talking about the political philosopher John Locke.

Ive seen the whole show, most of which when the episodes were first premiered. I'm merely doing a re-watch. You can talk about whatever you want, this thread is naturally going to have spoilers.

I think John Locke's character arc is most tragic. You said much of what I would have said. The 6th season is crazy because it's just not John Locke, but The Man In Black, who had been doing that with previous dead people, but he used Locke to his advantage, basically using him (and Ben, who also pushed John to believe he had to die in order to save the island) as a pawn in his plan to kill Jacob and leave the island

Anakin's is tragic, sure he may have been a little selfish and whatnot, but it's still tragic, especially because he hurt those close to him (Pademe, Obi-wan, etc..). He does redeem himself and is brought back to the light side at the end of Return of the Jedi, so he does have somewhat of a happy ending.

John Locke just dies.

That is where they got the name, they even joke about it in one episode. Locke used an alias for a little while in the show, Jeremy Bentham, also another philosopher.

Er... I watched the last two seasons of Lost............

John Locke is great but Anakin is slightly more memorable......

Not that I'm a huge star wars fan.

Anakin is not so good in the newer movies, but Darth Vader is awesome in the originals.

But if you only watched the last 2 seasons of Lost, you haven't seen enough of the real John Locke, most of what you see is Fake John Locke (Flocke). The last 2 seasons are much more exciting to see Locke in action if you've seen the other seasons, it all makes more sense.

I must also say, that, Hayden Christenson's portrayal of Anakin Skywalker just makes him look like a crybaby, and I didn't find much of his acting very good, whereas Terry O' Quinn (John Locke) is a much better actor, and you could really feel his pain, or any other emotion he conveyed.

People are more au fait intellectually discussing the Lost character John Locke than they are the monumental philosopher John Locke.

I don't want to live on this planet anymore.
