BIRDSONGS OF THE MESOZOIC at ProgDay 2012!

Fans of progressive music will already be familiar with BIRDSONGS OF THE MESOZOIC.  With a history spanning over 30 years, Birdsongs is an instrumental quartet that developed out of Boston's post-avant punk scene in 1980.  Since then Birdsongs has flown a distinctive course, creating an innovative mix of classical, rock, jazz and the avant.  Over the years the band has earned international recognition and praise for its originality and excellence.  ProgDay is very pleased to host a long-overdue performance by these masters of contemporary prog.

ProgDay is the longest running progressive rock festival in the world.  ProgDay 2012 will take place on Saturday, September 1st, and Sunday, September 2nd, at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  For more information, and to hear music from this year's bands, please visit us at www.progday.net.

That's certainly a good start!  Smile
I actually only have Petrophonics, but I like it very much and probably should get more.  Suggestions are welcome.

ACCORDO DEI CONTRARI at ProgDay 2012!

Formed in 2001, Italian band ACCORDO DEI CONTRARI set out to create original exciting instrumental music with influences ranging from fusion and symphonic prog to jazz and 20th century classical music.  After much work, they released "Kinesis" in 2007:

"Let me start by saying that I regard "Kinesis" as a prog masterpiece: Accordo Dei Contrari has delivered a real musical gem for the year 2007, refurbishing the jazz-prog area with vigor, creativity and powerful colorfulness. Going beyond the typical sound of a quartet of guitar/bass/keyboard/drums...the band sets its style with inspiration from Area, Return to Forever, Deus ex Machina, Gentle Giant, and to a lesser degree, ELP and Happy the Man."  - Cesar Inca, PROGARCHIVES

Which was followed by "Kublai" in 2011:

The former outing was one of the classics of 2007. Combining symphonic Art-Rock, Jazz-Fusion and Prog-Metal, ADC has then forged its own path...the music on “Kublai” is absolutely on a par with that on its predecessor, occasionally being superior to it. ...there is a strong sense of unity and balance in their sound. What in particular displays the band’s strength is an extreme reflection of the diversity in Art-Rock and Jazz-Fusion... From the jazz rock-y landscapes to the distorted, structurally complex King Crimson-ian guitar riff, over which hovers a quasi-improvised, Manfred Mann-evoking Moog solo, to a lush, dark, full-of-vintage-beauty sympho-prog of the Van Der Graaf Generator variety with a relentless duel between organ and guitar as one of its central musical features, all of these pieces are ones that will be re-discovered each listen for quite some time. ...“Kublai” is a musically colorful album, located under the shadow of expert musicianship. Recommended is the word – in its irrefragable sense." - PROGRESSOR

ProgDay 2012 is very pleased to have the opportunity to host Accordo Dei Contrari's first performance in the United States.

Accordo Dei Contrari will join Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic at ProgDay 2012, the 18th edition of the longest running progressive rock festival in the world.  ProgDay 2012 will take place on Saturday, September 1st, and Sunday, September 2nd, at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  For more information, and to hear music from this year's bands, please visit us at www.progday.net.

JACK DUPON Plays ProgDay 2012!

"They have mixed Zappa, Etron Fou Leloublan, King Crimson, Adrian Belew, Gong, Magma, the psychedelic, avant-garde, to concoct a musical machine... zany and crazy, which has freed itself from many formal conventions... Everyone is unanimous in recognizing the talent and boundless imagination of these musicians." - Harmonie Magazine

"...a jewel that is reassuring about the ability of some of today’s artists to think outside of the box, and offer up music that is both different and fearless." - Progressia Magazine

The foundations of French band JACK DUPON go back to 2001, but it wasn't until 2006 that the group surfaced with their first release, L'Africain Disparu. Already the audacity and spirit that defines JACK DUPON was in place. Since then they have developed a reputation for exceptional live shows ("Best Band," Brugheas festival, 2007; 4th Prize out of 1800 entrants and "Best Bassist," Bilborock festival, Spain, 2007) and released eclectic, creative and acclaimed albums:  L'Echelle du Désir in 2008 (Top 50 albums of the year, ‘Délire Musical,’ CFLX-FM, Quebec), and Démon Hardď in 2011 (#1 Progressive Rock CD, Arlequins). Bascule á Vif is a recent two-disc set capturing the energy of JACK DUPON live.

After their performance at the 2010 preshow, we received many requests to host them at Storybook Farm.  The audience will be in for a treat when JACK DUPON takes the main stage at ProgDay 2012.

JACK DUPON will join Accordo Dei Contrari (Italy) and Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic (US) at ProgDay 2012, the 18th edition of the longest running progressive rock festival in the world.  ProgDay 2012 will take place on Saturday, September 1st, and Sunday, September 2nd, at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  For more information, and to hear music from this year's bands, please visit us at www.progday.net.

ProgDay 2012 Preshow and More!

In the interest of keeping our attendees informed of musical events around the ProgDay weekend, we are happy to announce two performances.

GOING FOR THE ONE and MINSTRELS IN THE GALLERY:

On Friday, August 31, the Carrboro Arts Center will be hosting a show featuring Going For The One and Minstrels In The Gallery.

Going For The One is America's premier Yes tribute, celebrating the music of one of rock history's most important and inspired bands. GFTO does not present a literal recreation or impersonation of Yes; it is rather a group of talented musicians who strive to preserve and continue the tradition of classic Yes music and performance.  Versions of songs are derived from both studio and live performances, with some liberty taken within the bounds of what Yes might have done. As much as possible, the band use the equipment Yes used in the 70s, with some updates employed for technical reasons. The band's goal in presenting this music is clear with each performance: GFTO is a celebration of Yes music.  The current show blends tracks drawn from The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge, Going for the One, and other Yes albums from the 70s.

Formed in 2011 and bringing together members from the Rochester and Cleveland areas, Minstrels In The Gallery has already begun to establish a reputation as one the best Jethro Tull tribute bands in the country through shows in Cleveland, Rochester, and Pittsburgh, as well as at the ClassicFest at Nelson Ledges (Ohio).  The current show draws from Tull music from the 60s and 70s, with an emphasis on the classic 70s tracks.

DEAD CAN DANCE:

The reunion World Tour of neoclassical world music duo Dead Can Dance is coming to DPAC, Durham Performing Arts Center, on Saturday, September 1. This world tour includes only 12 US cities, including Durham, to be accompanied by the release of a new album.  Showtime is 8pm.

ProgDay 2012 is the 18th edition of the longest running progressive rock festival in the world. The festival will take place on Saturday, September 1st, and Sunday, September 2nd, at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  Confirmed bands include Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic (US), Accordo Dei Contrari (Italy) and Jack Dupon (France), with five more bands to be announced.

For more information about ProgDay, the Friday and Saturday night shows, and to hear music from this year's lineup, please visit us at www.progday.net.

Thanks!

Dead Can Dance, eh?  Interesting!  I'll be very curious to hear of the "average progster's" reaction to this band!

PROGDAY 2012: Jack Dupon Cancels, Karcius Confirms!

JACK DUPON has unfortunately cancelled their North American tour, which means that they will not be able to perform at ProgDay this year, however KARCIUS from Montreal has confirmed for ProgDay 2012.

"Karcius has to be one of the most exciting prog-jazz bands around in the current times: the sound that this ensemble from the French Canada offers to the listener is fresh and powerful, showing off its legendary influences yet shouting out its crucial modernity."
- Cesar Inca, Progarchives

Founded in 2001, Montreal's Karcius has developed an international reputation for their three instrumental releases. On their third album, Episodes, the band redefined their sound and brought new colors and complexity into the mix, authenticating their need to re-envision themselves musically and professionally. On their fourth and most recent release, The First Day, KARCIUS once again evolved - this time with the addition of vocals.  Placed somewhere between Porcupine Tree and Pink Floyd, this is an exciting time for the band as they explore the new possibilities created by once again re-inventing themselves.

Returning from a two week European tour, ProgDay is pleased to host KARCIUS for this exclusive US appearance.

KARCIUS will join Accordo Dei Contrari (Italy) and Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic (US) at ProgDay 2012, the 18th edition of the longest running progressive rock festival in the world.  ProgDay 2012 will take place on Saturday, September 1st, and Sunday, September 2nd, at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  For more information, and to hear music from this year's bands, please visit us at www.progday.net.

EPHEMERAL SUN to play PROGDAY 2012!

"The Verdict: There were many excellent albums released in 2010, but [Harvest Aorta] was the only true masterpiece."
- Starhammer, PROGARCHIVES.

Started as a project featuring ex-RAIN FELL WITHIN members JOHN BATTEMA (keyboards) and CHARLES GORE (bass), EPHEMERAL SUN began life as a vocal band with an atmospheric and experimental approach to  prog-metal.  However, with the release of their second album, Harvest Aorta, the band abandoned vocals and found their musical identity in a special captivating brand of progressive rock combining influences from symphonic, metal, ambient, electronica and fusion, presented with a strong, almost cinematic vision.  Compared to bands like ANEKDOTEN, PORCUPINE TREE, DREAM THEATER, PINK FLOYD, CAMEL and FINCH, but really sounding like none of them, EPHEMERAL SUN has continued the pursuit of their unique sound.

EPHEMERAL SUN will join Accordo Dei Contrari (Italy), Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic (US) and Karcius (Canada) at ProgDay 2012, the 18th edition of the longest running progressive rock festival in the world.  ProgDay 2012 will take place on Saturday, September 1st, and Sunday, September 2nd, at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  For more information, and to hear music from this year's bands, please visit us at www.progday.net.

CONSIDER THE SOURCE Performs at PROGDAY 2012!

"Dressed head-to-toe in loose-fitting white cotton, his long hair tucked beneath a fez, the guitarist appeared like some otherworldly ascetic, a deity inhabiting a human form, perhaps, or at least a swami of some sort. His playing only added to the aura of otherness his appearance cultivated. Favoring Eastern and Middle Eastern modalities, Marin was a whirling dervish of virtuosity, his fretless double-neck guitar evoking sounds more akin to an Indian sarod or a tenor saxophone than to the standard output of electric guitar. The combined effect made the listener feel compelled toward a semi-mystical state." - Jeff Miers, BUFFALONEWS.COM

Billing themselves as Middle Eastern Sci-fi Fusion, CONSIDER THE SOURCE is a musical melting pot of Middle Eastern scales, psychedelic jams, and a hard rocking rhythm section.  Listing influences from world music, jazz and rock, and bands like THE BAD PLUS, MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA, KING CRIMSON, PRIMUS, MESHUGGAH and TOOL, CONSIDER THE SOURCE has developed a signature sound like no other.  Crisscrossing the US seven times in the last two years, the band has established a well-deserved reputation for exciting and propulsive live performances, all of which will be on display at ProgDay 2012!

CONSIDER THE SOURCE will join Accordo Dei Contrari (Italy), Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic (US), Karcius (Canada) and Ephemeral Sun at ProgDay 2012, the 18th edition of the longest running progressive rock festival in the world.  ProgDay 2012 will take place on Saturday, September 1st, and Sunday, September 2nd, at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

DOCTOR NERVE Storms the Stage at PROGDAY 2012!

"Stravinsky meets Zappa and they're both on acid... Triple dose!"
- Lizzy, PROGARCHIVES

"The band is tightly focused on mixing the combined heritages of Zappa's dadaist facet, Henry Cow, 20th Century chamber, psychedelia, free jazz and near-punkish rock with a strongly wicked twist. ...their sound is ballsier and more energetic than many current mainstream rock bands...It's also not listener-friendly, but listener-defying: this music stands in front of the listener and defies them to stay calm and loyal to his aesthetic criteria or join it in search of new, unnamable experiences. ...The guitar/bass/drum set is very solidly traced on the tracks of punchy rock, while the remaining instruments (reeds, vibes) display a neurotic orchestral amalgam which brings us memories of Zappa's most bizarre passages of his early 70s albums...Are you a RIO-or-Zheul freak? If so, did you ever wonder how Henry Cow would have been like during this post-grunge era of rock? Or did you ever wonder how Ruins would be like if they had less vocals and more instruments? Pick this or any other Doctor Nerve item and you'll be in awe of what you'll find...sheer weird excellence." - Cesar Inca, PROGARCHIVES

DOCTOR NERVE has been annihilating the boundaries between metal, contemporary music, and improvisation since 1984.  The band’s repertoire includes tightly composed, complex, fast-changing music, and is executed by a white-hot team of musicians, each of whom have carved out their own niches in New York City’s new music scene. An often requested band among ProgDay fans of music's more experimental side, ProgDay is pleased to offer a blistering set by a band that has cut a singular trail in the world of contemporary music.

DOCTOR NERVE will join Accordo Dei Contrari (Italy), Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic (US), Karcius (Canada), Ephemeral Sun (US) and Consider The Source (US) at ProgDay 2012, the 18th edition of the longest running progressive rock festival in the world.  ProgDay 2012 will take place on Saturday, September 1st, and Sunday, September 2nd, at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Damn...this is coming out to be a pretty sweet lineup.
Dig me...But don't...Bury me
I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive

Woah, Doctor Nerve!  Did not know they were still around.  An, umm, "interesting" band.  Smile
Hope you have good attendance.  Are you trying to get a "big draw" type band?  Not that one should be needed, as the bands that I know of here are all good.

Occasionally I wish I lived on the east coast.

ILUVATAR at ProgDay 2012!

"A must for you Hogarth era MARILLION fans out there." - Mellotron Storm, PROGARCHIVES

With a sound that has often been compared to bands like RUSH, KANSAS, GENESIS and MARILLION, ILUVATAR began performing around Baltimore in 1992.  By the end of the 1990s, and four albums later, the band had become one of the premier American bands of the neo-progressive scene. Though their last studio release was in 1999, ILUVATAR continued to write and record. Revitalized with a new singer, the band will be performing material from their upcoming release, as well as favorites from their classic 1990s albums.

ILUVATAR will join Accordo Dei Contrari (Italy), Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic (US), Karcius (Canada), Ephemeral Sun (US), Consider The Source (US) and Doctor Nerve (US) at ProgDay 2012, the 18th edition of the longest running progressive rock festival in the world.  ProgDay 2012 will take place on Saturday, September 1st, and Sunday, September 2nd, at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Advance tickets are available on the ProgDay web site until August 15th.

DREADNAUGHT Takes the PROGDAY Stage!

"...very complex and progressive, moving from beautiful melodic parts to avant-garde to hard rocking funk stuff and punky outbursts coming from god knows where...everything is well balanced and there is no way to know where they're gonna go next...one moment they are dark sounding and the other they are the happiest band alive."

- Sagichim, PROGARCHIVES.COM

"Yes, there are...'country music' influences...very rockabilly ones...like a really tripped out, ornate and angry version of the Stray Cats. There are also '90's King Crimsonish screaming guitars, Steve Howeish solos and strange vocal harmonies. There's occasionally a lick or two that reminds of The Dixie Dregs..."

- Fred Trafton, GEPR

"Being a chameleon band from its birth, Dreadnaught still continues changing the compositional and stylistic aspects of their music; and they do it both skillfully and successfully... Heartily recommended and without any reservations. It's a kind of eternal music, which will bring you joy each time you return to it..."

- PROGRESSOR

Formed in 1996, DREADNAUGHT sought to combine traditional Americana with progressive rock.  What resulted was a mix of styles and attitudes that on paper would seem to be a train wreck waiting to happen, but which in reality worked in unexpected and singular ways.  DREADNAUGHT brewed a concoction of prog, Americana, jazz, funk, classical and other music that ultimately birthed a sound like none before.

Passing themselves off as a "fun, nice, audience-friendly musical group" as the house band for The Music Hall/New Hampshire Public radio series Writers On A New England Stage, DREADNAUGHT have worked with authors ranging from STEPHEN KING and DAN BROWN to MADELINE ALBRIGHT and NEIL GAIMAN, and performed with musicians like TONY LEVIN and JOHN ENTWISTLE.

DREADNAUGHT will join Accordo Dei Contrari (Italy), Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic (US), Karcius (Canada), Iluvatar (US), Consider The Source (US), Doctor Nerve (US) and Ephemeral Sun (US) at ProgDay 2012, the 18th edition of the longest running progressive rock festival in the world.  ProgDay 2012 will take place on Saturday, September 1st, and Sunday, September 2nd, at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
