i'm into more technical stuff( Cardiacs being my fave band) and love the usual prog rock stuff like Genesis.....so any Rec's od advise would be smashing.

In the Land of Grey and Pink is easily their best album and a must have for everyone. For a third album, possibly Cunning Stunts or maybe If I Could Do it Again.....

^ I was gonna say get "If I could" but I see I missed the mark! Personally I'm not a fan of In The Land, but it's still checking out, flawed as it might be.

If I may make a suggestion, do not follow everyone's thoughts and ideas here ... myself included ... do something different ... and get away from the so-called "progressive" terminology ... if you like the album and want to listen to more of the music ... follow your heart and see which album attracts your attention and go after it. That is by very far the most concrete and complete Caravan album there is ... and it's power and definition was never duplicated again in any other Caravan album. Before that they do not sound as professional or as strong, and after that, not as complete and capable as they could be, although I happen to like "Cunning Stunts" and the album right after it a lot, even though most people don't. I much prefer them to the two previous albums to "Girls that ... ".
My one recommendation, which is to "break" that progressive idea, is to get the "New Sinfonia" album that is live with an Orchestra, because it is the best rock concert you will ever hear with an orchestra and it is lovingly done, but is not appreciated by many folks here because it is a symphonic album, and not a "progressive" album ... but it tells you something about the quality of the music this band makes and where it came from and what can be done with it, instead of killing it.
After "New Sinfonia" you can go back and get the albums that have the pieces you just heard with an orchestra, and while they are nice and all that, in the end, they are not as good as the band became and aspired to be -- which was -- even better!

I really like 'If I Could...', it's got a strange sort of melancholia about it. I think 'Grey & Pink' is a little overrated. Their live at Fairfield Halls album is good too.
