Anyone share my annoyance with reviewers that give low scores to albums that they obvisuosly do not own or have not listened to. From my listening experience no prog album has ever warrented a 1 star review

That is the most absurd post !
Why have a 1 star possibility if not allowed to use it !

I just gave a 1 star rating to an album, that i was super disapointed with. Why not.

First sentence: any kind of superficial reviewing can occur.
Second sentence: ridiculous statement, but you can prove it to yourself, if you want, by having a go at these (among others)

()

Lastly, you can report particular reviews that you consider abusive (as long as it's not simply because the rate was 1 star).

Why should anybody write a review without having listened to the album?
I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

It seems you're new here so welcome.

A) This issue has been discussed and discussed. In this community, we must assume that all member's contributions are valid until clear evidence to the contrary shows itself. This means that, yes, some fake or manipulative reviews are left in place.

B) There are certainly albums labelled "prog" that merit one star. Maybe you've haven't explored the genre enough yet.

C) Yes it annoys everyone at least a little. Some of us more than others.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

Dig a little deeper bro, there are plenty of one-star albums some that even deserve no stars at all.

It annoyed me that somone gave ELP's Trilogy only 1 star recently but to be fair that had obviously heard it as evidenced by the review. Thats the key. Reviews that don't mention the tracks or the style of the music and then give 1 star should be eradicated imo (although I don't know any examples).

1 Star (by PA definition) means "Poor-for completists only" Meaning it is meant for those that want to have the complete discography of the artist. It does not state "Horrible, Pc of Krapp, should not have even been released, so on..."

To me a PA 1 star review simply means it has value and merit, but only to those that want all the albums by an artist. I think in your printed review you can offer your distaste for the album.....that's why I really only pay attention to the written portion. The rating to me gives the album its pecking order among all other reviewed PA albums.

In my heart of hearts I do get annoyed at reviewers who do not seem to understand the albums they review; I think any review should represent intelligence and careful listening.  At the same time, this site is open to the general public.  Anyone who wants to can come on in and get involved.  So, we end up with a lot of diverse opinions and perspectives.  I may disagree with some, and they may disagree with me, but I will defend our right to express our thoughts here, even if some of those thoughts do not correspond to mine.

In short, such reviews come with the territory.  If you don't like a particular review, counter it (but not abusively - stick to the music).  On a related note, I think there are also some reviews here that come from friends of the artists reviewed that are overly glowing.  That comes with the territory, too.
The world of sound is certainly capable of infinite variety and, were our sense developed, of infinite extensions. -- George Santayana, "The Sense of Beauty"

Not that I've checked my record, but I would never give 1 star to any album that wasn't somehow meaningful to me, like if it was a Pink Floyd or Genesis or Yes album (fat chance), or it was considered the bees knees, or it feigned importance and deserved a dressing down.

I can imagine, however, wanting to give 1 star to Lady Gaga without listening if she appeared on this site. This is individual protest, and I'm cool with that and doing that.

I'm yet to find myself something that I truly think is 1 star, I'm starting to think that giving out 1 stars is a sort of harsh reaction to an album you don't like immediately, but with that I'm sure 1 star albums exist.

^^Gaga's pretty progressive for a pop artist, probably the most interesting pop star in a long time .. and it would simply be unprincipled and unreputable to give any rating to any album without listening at least once

I find that I give out more 5-stars than 1-stars to be honest, and I try to make sure I give out more ratings in the middle range than either.

And even then, when I give out a 1-star I'm usually upfront about being a reflection of my own tastes... as any review is, really. Maybe no album is objectively a 1-star effort... but by that token, there's no objectively 5-star albums either. The star system's about personal tastes, after all, not some absolute standard of quality we can measure in a lab.

I think I gave the " Best Of" Pink Floyd a 1- star in response to Royfairbank..........., not really proud of it but close to the mark IMO. Also there are a  couple of one star reviews I need to redo. In retrospect a tad harshEmbarrassed But rate at whichever rating you feel fits for the time you review it. We used to read criticism on 5- star reviews too. Swings both ways. And the best way to handle it is make sure you have done your own review too if you voice so strongly against a reviewWink

Then the question becomes: Why would someone choose to review it at all?

Unless they are reviewing the entire discography of some artist, or they have been asked to review a certain album, in which case it woud be helpful for them to mention that reason.

Her music's pretty normal actually, even for a pop artist. The shock factor is what's getting all the buzz going on, but her music's completely normal...
