Hello!

I've been using Sen' HD202 for 2 years now, my first headphones of any real quality. I even brought another pair last year when my first died by lack of interest in doing researches to upgrade. Now, this pair also died two weeks ago.

Since I have some spare money and I'm in real need of new headphones, I've been looking around the web. My budget is around 100-150$ (Canadian dollars) and I need closed headphones (I know about the loss of quality of closed vs open ones).

I found 2 different that are available in my city, the SRH440 (105$ can, 44ohm) and the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro (135$ can, 64?ohm)

I've been hearing lot of good thing about the 280, but I recently found about the 440. I would personnally would go with the hd280, since I somewhat know what to expect from Sennheiser, and I expect to maybe buy a amp (I don't know if it's needed at all, since all I use my headphone for is to listen music from my laptop and my iPod Touch)

Which one should I buy? Do I do a good choice buying either? if not, what would you recommend?

If I might add, I did read some reviews, but they are all really contrary, some saying the HDs sounds crappy, while others saying they sounds amazing :s

^ that would be where taste comes into play.  You should just see if you can try them.

I don't think it's possible. Unless the shops have demo models which I can try, but I doubt.

I have the 280's and am generally happy with them.  They're certainly better than the bottom heavy Sony's I had prior to the 280's.  But as mentioned you should see if you can give them a listen first.
Can you tell me where we're headin'?
Lincoln County Road or Armageddon.

Great! Thanks for the answer.

Do you use them directly plugged into your source or do you use an amp?

In the HD-25 spec, the frequency response is given as follows: 30 - 16000Hz. I find the high cut-off to be too low for a monitoring set of headphones...

Sennheiser HD202 should be OK for you and in your budget.
Closed headphones (better for noisy environment but doesn't keep all the noise out...)
Has a good response, even if there is a clear bass boost.
On sale at amazon at the moment for 28$.

Also, this Sony looks nice but a bit cheap for noise-cancelling headphones...

Best of luck!

Specs don't mean much and what it does, it does it well. It's not for nothing that's it's a reference for years in the professional field.
It's sturdy, well construted and sonically it's neutral and balanced.

I've tried many headphones for portable use include various Senn, Beyerdynamic, Etymotic, Ultrasone, even a B&O i was offered.

Then i settled for the HD25 that i compared in shop with some Grado,
Denon...and the HD25 always win;

I've never found something as balanced, neutral and efficient.

I don't say that it's the best in the world (the headphone market has recently exploded and there's a lot of offer) but it remains an absolute reference in portable IMO and doesn't requires an amp to produce a good result, if paired with a good source.

Specs mean what specs mean, and this is why specs are important and why it is important to read them: The Sennheiser w/site specs the HD25-SP-II @ 30-16000Hz and the HD25-1-II @ 16-22000Hz ... the different frequency response reflects the slightly different can design ... it's the HD25-1-II's that professionals use and that's why they are 50% more expensive. HD25 won't do. I've checked, and they are around 300$ in Canada, which is twice my budget, without taxes applied.

I hope you like them.  I listen to them through my Yamaha RX-497 (a decent enough receiver), which apparently has more than adequate headphone output.
