I am relatively new to prog and I am looking for recommendations for newer prog bands. I like classics such as Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Rush, Pink Floyd, but the only newer prog ive listened to is Beardfish, which i enjoyed immensely. Can anyone recommend me more bands like Beardfish/newer prog?

I'm just going to make a list of great modern prog bands...

The Mars Volta - Energetic, and very chaotic music. Also very heavy, great muscianship.
Porcupine Tree - Diverse discography, old albums have Floyd Influence when newer albums have heavy feel. Great Soundscapes and feeling to songs. Known to have very few (if any) bad tracks.
Oceansize
Riverside - Progressive metal band, with great emotion. Not a DT clone.
Dream Theater - "Pinnacle" of prog metal.
Glass Hammer - Symphonic prog, ELP like.
Ozric Tentacles - Huge discography. All very good.
The Flower Kings
Spock's Beard
Neal Morse
Maudlin of the Well - Experimental band with great side projects.
Opeth - Another well known metal prog band, have both amazing clean and growling vocals.
Pain of Salvation
Phideaux
Tool
Devin Townsend

All are great an vary in genre.

Bands with comments are artist i listen to alot, and i actually know about.

Which other classic bands do you know? I guess you must know Genesis, if not that's one to check out. As well as ELP (though I don't like any of their albums as a whole, they have many wonderful songs). I also like Rick Wakeman solo pretty much, specially 6 Wives of Henry the VIII, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Myths and Legends of King Arthur, and criminal record; as well as Out There. Mike Oldfield also has some very beautiful albums, from those I've heard, Tubular Bells is really great, and I believe the rest of his 70's albums must be just about as good. Also, Renaisance is very good, and Annie Haslam (their singer) must be one of the very best singers in prog (and one of the few females). From newer prog, I enjoyed Transatlantic's "Whirld Tour" very much.

And some non-english albums I really like are: Harmonium's "Si on avait besoin d'un cinquiem saison", Focus's "Hamburger Concerto", Cast's "Originallis", Anglagard's "Hybris", Metamorphosis's "Inferno", Bacamarte's "Depois do Fim", Triana's "El Patio" and "Hijos del Agobio".

Hope you find something you can enjoy from this.

terrific band (Beardfish); I'd think like-mindeds as the Tangent would be a good place to start, some of their live stuff even reminds me of Phish or the Dead

Par Lindh Project .Been around since the nineties. Debut album Gothic Impressions is musically on a par with Anglagard's Hybris (but with slightly dodgy vocals on some tracks). They released an album recentlyTime Mirror which is very strong ELP/keyboard type material although is only just over 40 minutes long.

Glass Hammer. Made a trio of brilliant symphonic keyboard lead albums in the early 00's- Chronomotree,Lex Rex and Shadowlands.

Magenta. Welsh neo/symphonic band with female vocals. They do have one dud (Home) but everything else in their back catologue is worth checking out especially the live albums and the DVD's.

IQ. Been around for years (since 1983). Their last album Frequency is an absolute belter and very probably their best.

Based on the artists you cited, I suggest you look under the Eclectic Prog listings on this website (Beardfish, KC, and GG are all categorized there).  Here are several good ones from that list:  Gnidrolog, Birds & Buildings, and Robert Fripp.

Also, for a variety of newer prog try Coheed & Cambria, Sigur Ros, The Decemberists, and Pelican.  If you feel really daring, go for Ahleuchatistas.

I recommend you try the Canterbury Scene and all the old English bands there. You might like Caravan, maybe National Health or that kind of stuff. Oh, and do listen to  Camel.

Canterbury scene rules. It's not new, if that's what you were really after, but if it's just prog in general, check it out. Prog with a sense of fun and whimsy.

Alternatively listen to Italian Prog.

For modern prog you can't go past Porcupine Tree, Opeth (depending on how you feel about metal. If you don't dig growling, get the album Damnation, which is soft throughout and absolutely stunning), or The Mars Volta (get De-Loused in the Comatorium and ignore the rest until you've listened to it five or six times, MV are dense).

Genesis (Peter Gabriel-era Genesis sound more progresive/psychedelic, Phill Collins-era Genesis were very successful commercially and sound great)
Transatlantic (My favourite of present day bands)
Kaipa (Sweden, features Transatlantic and Flower Kings guitarist Roine Stolt)
KBB (Japan)
Jethro Tull (Thick As A Brick is the top rated album on this site)
Yes (Close To The Edge, Yes Album, Relayer...)
Atomic Rooster (Great band)

Some interesting bands :

Seven Reizh - Samsara (a mix of celtic folk and arabian music) :

Orphan Project - Orphan found (melodic neo/metal prog with astonishing vocal performance)
sorry cannot found samples for this album

Izz - I move (impressive mix of melodic rock, progressive rock and trip-hop)

Enchant 'time lost' (neo/prog-metal, a collection of leftover songs from the 'wounded' sessions and of songs from their 'blueprint' sessions)

"Magma was the very first gothic rock band" (Didier Lockwood)

I highly recommend you just explore the streaming tracks available on this site.  It doesn't cost you a thing and you can always click it off if it doesn't click with you. Big smile
One of my favorite streaming discoveries was Talisma.  And also The Gourishankar.  I would not likely have found either of these bands were it not for the PA streaming.

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...
