I usually play around with the charts every month or so, and I noticed there were unusual and severe changes in the course of the last month. There are loads of new albums on the charts (more than usual, both old and new, and mostly "less known"). If including video releases in the chart, all of them have almost without exeption made significant jumps.

Have there been any changed to the algorithm or other programmatic aspects that might inflict on the calculation of the chart? Or is this just random chance playing in (and in that case, some devote and avid DVD fans too: I believe that specific change is too significant to be random).

A few weeks ago someone brought something like this up somewhere, and Max said there was a bug in the charts accepting new ratings and he fixed it. The algorithm has not been deliberately changed.

I would not consider more people reviewing under-reviewed releases like new albums and DVDs to be "random."

A lot of time when a new album comes out fans will post great reviews very quickly, as we saw with Phideaux's Snowtorch (#24 on the big chart after a week of being out). After a month, it's down to the high 90s.
