Eternal Sunshine vs Moulin Rouge!

   Recently, I noticed it's pretty easy to get into a debate in regards of these two films since they seem so similar in a lot of ways yet create such diverse opinions. I also noticed that many people like one & dislike the other. My personal favorite film is & has always been Moulin Rouge! since it was released. Although Eternal Sunshine is a good movie with an exeptional plot, beautiful direction, & fascinating messages, I don't think it should be considered one of the top movies of the past decade. There are a lot of plotholes and character flaws that i think weakens it tremendously compared to the best movies of that decade (which i consider Moulin Rouge to be the top). Also the subplot between Tom Wilkinson & Kristen Dunst seemed to go nowhere. What's your guys opinions? Which do you think is better & why?

	Eternal Sunshine only because I just didn't like Moulin Rouge that much. My wife loved it, though.

	Eternal Sunshine is an incredible movie, it IS one of the best movies of the last decade. Moulin Rouge however, I fcking hate that movie, aside from the excellent art direction and visuals, Jim Broadbent's performance and Nicole Kidman's sexiness there's nothing I like about it. I know musicals are supposed to be over the top, they're also supposed to be entertaining and engaging. Watching this movie just made me feel violated. The film goes back and forth between over the top cartoony incoherence and cheesily executed melodrama. Kidman and McGregor just don't click, they are good actors, but not in this movie. Even the art direction is hard to appreciate because the film is edited by a monkey with ADD apparrently who felt compelled to cut away every millisecond, the film almost gave me a seizure for this reason. Oh yeah, it also boasts the worst cover of Roxanne EVER. I really* don't like Baz Lurrmann's style of directing. Edited by boo boo - February 21 2011 at 10:47

	Goes to show my taste in movies i guess haha, I thought the Roxanne segment was one of the highlights of the movie. I thought it was very impressive how all these fast-pace camera angles were given a lot of focus & precision. Almost every time I watch the movie (specifically the Roxanne part) I notice an angle or the way it was lit that I didn't catch before. I also thought how the emotion gradually builds towards the end where Kidman's saved was very dramatic. The changes of cartooniness and melodrama (which doesn't seem cheesy when there's segments like when Nicole Kidman finds out she's dying) are actually acceptable because the intention of the film is to reach as many highpoints & lowpoints as it could. The outlandish nature of the film is one of it's strengths, not an unintentional mistake. Edited by TealFoxes - February 21 2011 at 10:47

	For me the highlight of the movie was Jim Broadbent's cover of Like a Virgin. THAT was awesome. Regardless of the intention though, I'm just not into that kind of direction. Not because I think it's style over substance. Since my favorite directors include Kubrick, Gilliam, Tarantino, Coens, Aronofsky, Burton, etc. I have nothing against stylishness. In fact I fancy movies that favor visuals and atmosphere over complex plots. I love crazy trippy stuff. But almost everything about MR just comes off to me as incredibly forced to me. 	Moulin Rouge is one of my all time favourite films. So I vote for that.

	Yes, that moment was pretty funny Moulin Rouge does have it's flaws, though it's my favorite film I wouldn't say it's a perfect film. It certainly does have a manner to it's style I can get into. Edited by TealFoxes - February 21 2011 at 11:07

	There is only one film that I love more than Eternal Sunshine, and that is Brazil. I doubt there are other films that could have such an impact on me. I didn't see Moulin Rouge and I never felt compelled to.

	Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of the best films I've ever seen, Moulin Rouge was nothing special as far as I'm concerned.
