Well , I am Dead of going to school and having no one to talk or share musical tastes (Surely almost all here are in the same situation) So i am gonna to convert them to prog (see image) Wink

Recomendations so Far:

Metalhead friend (big fan of metallica and RATM):
DreamTheater/LiquidTensionExperiment , Adagio , Tool , Porcupine Tree ,
BtBAM , Isis , Pelican , Deftones

Punk friend (serious punk fan , loves misfits , and ska-punk) :
Cardiacs , The Mars volta , Coheed and Cambria ,  The Dear Hunter

Can you give "hook" songs of this bands?

So I have two great friends , One is a sort of a metalhead , the other one is a punk rock fan , Can the experiencied members of progarchives help me with their great and vast musical experience and  recommend "hook" songs or bands to converting them to prog? Tongue Muajajajaja

More recomendations plz!

Well, my journey started with the Genesis of the 80's and worked it's way back through their catalog from there.  That doesn't sound like it'll work all that well with those 2 particular friends however... lol

Perhaps start with some Dream Theater for the metal head and something like Mars Volta for the punk guy?

I already thinked of Dream theather , I think the metal head is the easiest guy considering the large amount of great prog metal bands , But the punk guy is the challenge , He liked a song of the cardiacs xD

If your friend thinks of himself as a metalhead and doesn't know Dream Theater, or Symphony-X, you might wanna ask him to reconsider...

Forget Dream Theatre dish them out a heap 'O' Liquid Tension Experiment or Adagio. That should get the Metalhead's attention. As for the Punker you're on track with TMV.

If I were my Avatar I could use Compulsion (as it is a way the Forsaken used to make people do things they really did not want to do)

or play songs enough in the background so that the songs would siege in through their unconscious minds, soft propaganda is it called, play enough prog in their surroundings, so that they get used to the sound of it, not show stuff down peoples thoughts people are quick to put on their brakes if you do that.

Try BtBAM. Alaska is probably good if he's not used to longer type songs.

From my experience, it's no so much WHAT you convert people with, but HOW you do it. For example I was chilling with my friend in his car, and I started playing "And You And I" by Yes, since we were both in the mood for something chilled out. He has no idea what it is I'm playing, but he knows that he hates Yes, since all he knows by them is "Owner of a Lonely Heart". So when the song stops I ask "Would you like to hear more of that?" and of course he does, since he really dug the song. When he asks what it was and I tell him it was Yes, he gets this look of disbelief that's totally priceless.

So yeah, it's the right music, but it's also the right timing and the right circumstance.
Heaven's made a cesspool of us all.

I've found I can't taking hanging out irl with prog heads all that much ;) It's nice to come up for air with other kinds of people. Besides, it reminds me too much of religious people trying to push their beliefs on me, i couldn't do it to others ;)

Is prog a religion?

YES

Hi,

Had fun one time ... with a room mate ... at first he was making fun of the music I was playing ... and then all of a sudden I never played it loud, and made sure he never saw or knew who it was ...

And next thing you know is he's asking what I am listening to.

Today, he is into prog as much as I am ... with one exception ... I still don't define the music by the term!

Ohhh ... and remember a quote from Henry Miller ... that man who tried to change the world? He got ____________________ crucified!

In the end ... is the friend really a friend, or are you acceding to his/her wishes?

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

He failed to add the Weird Al phase in there ... which means that we're all idiots anyway! You can see him flicking us off ... or is it Beat it?
