Anderson and Gabriel are the two best lyricists/writers so it boils down to their wind instrument playing.
Ian it is.

Thijs van Leer is technically miles ahead of any of the rest.

Peter Gabriel probably isn't the best AT playing wind instruments, but he is my favorite musician who HAPPENS to play wind instruments.

I was thinking of choosing Gabriel, but then I decided on Ian Anderson. Ian Anderson is just incredible. Peter Gabriel is also fantastic and has had great moments, but I find myself enjoying Ian Anderson more when it comes to the two playing wind instruments.

Would you like some Bailey's?

On the list of the ones I know, David Jackson.  Lindsay Cooper would have been a very good addition to this list, I think, and would have got my vote (amongst others), plus, I'm sure, a few other people's votes. Michel Berckmans is another one I'd like to mention. I also want to mention the flautists Herbie Mann and Bjorn J:Son Lindh for those unfamiliar with their work.

I wonder if the rest of PA members are tired of me and you putting Toby's name in every thread they can think of. LOL
But can they blame us? He needs to be mentioned...

Edit: ...on every thread they can think of! Wink

Latimer, then  Hastings and Anderson. Mel Collins is missing.
I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

As Dick Heckstall-Smith, Mel Collins and John Helliwell are not on the list I go for Ian McDonald.

I don't know why I've forgotten about Mel Collins (big fault)
As to Dick Heckstall-Smith he is rather a jazz performer and if I mentioned him I should mention also Miles Davis , John Coltrane, Herbie Mann etc etc etc .
Would you catch the final words of mine?

Ian hands down.
But I'd also like to mention Paul Minns (oboe and recorder) from Third Ear Band and James Harpham (recorder) from The Wooden O among my personal favourites.

Dave Jackson without any doubt. He made me love the sax, which was a daunting task (which was a daunting task) and he is also delicate in his flute playing.

Anderson came to flute almost by accident and Peter stopped playing flute after his debut solo album in 77. But they are the two most famous names inthe list.
