I live in Vancouver and - being a reasonably global city of late - a lot of bands are including it in their upcoming tours.  I would really like to support prog bands that make their way through town, but I don't really want to go digging through every bands' tour listing.

Is there an online service that informs you of band's tour dates (I'm sure there is) or, more specifically, prog band tour dates?

I'm into most of the bands that are a regular topic of conversation on these boards, and would be happy to support any who are just starting out.  I just need the info.

What do you use?

Go here: http://www.last.fm/events and set your location to Vancouver.

I can do it for you, actually: http://www.last.fm/events/+place/Canada/Vancouver

My recommendations: Cynic, Boris & Red Sparowes, Vampire Weekend (not prog but very nice), and maybe Katatonia too. Devin Townsend Project is in October. There's also The Legendary Pink Dots but I'm sure if I'd recommend them. Also, you'll have Roger Waters with The Wall in December, I'd be surprised to know that there are tickets left.

^Definitely agree with Alex on Vampire Weekend and Devin Townsend; seen both of them live this year, and they were both great.

www.pollstar.com has a decent city search feature for concerts coming up.

The Rickshaw Theatre for the heavier side of things, I saw Jakob, Isis and Russian Circles at the Rickshaw Thatre and Katatonia will be playing there also, their website is informative.

Biltmore Hotel is also another venue that has some bands like Red Sparrowes etc. have played and of course the Commodore Ballroom. Primus is Septemeber 25th at the PNE Forum and Black label Society with Clutch and Children of Bodom there on September 22nd.

keep proggin

By all means do! when I saw boris here in denver with torche they were incredible! actually the small club they were playing was packed! the show sold out and many fans had to be turned away, which is surprising for such a small unknown forieghn band! plus the red sparowes are a great band and im sure they will not dissapoint
who hiccuped endlessly trying to giggle but wound up with a sob

Yeah, one of my friends already convinced me.

It's not until august, so hopefully my credit card application goes through before then.
