What are some short prog songs that stand out as particularly good? Do you think it's harder to make short songs progressive than long ones?

Gentle Giant's "Octopus" is a perfect example of short prog songs. None of the songs reach the six-minute park, but the album is undoubtedly a progressive classic.

Yes "Five percent for nothing" (0:35) and "Long Distance Runaround" (3:33) are good examples as well.

Genesis is the obvious answer for this. The big one is, of course, Can-Utility and the Coastliners, which packs a whole lot of prog into a short amount of time.

Then there's The Lamb: 23 songs, only 3 of which are longer than 6 minutes. Yet one of the top rated albums on the site, by one of the indisputable masters of prog.

Not to mention later stuff like Dance On A Volcano and Blood On The Rooftops, both of which are under 6 minutes.

ELP - Brain Salad Surgery (the track not the album) .
Muse - Thoughts of a Dying Atheist
Renaissance - Northern Lights

..three short tracks off the top of my head that are full of proggy goodness
I'm sure its possible to come up with a long list of good short prog tracks. They are'nt that unusual.

Hi,

I have a lot of bands that have shorter trax, and one like Kayak is pretty darn good example.

But generally, if the band is mostly into the "prog" thing instead of its own expression and work, I tend to go out of it pretty quick.
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

^ indeed Royal Bed Bouncer, If This Is Your Welcome, Chance Of A Lifetime.

What about Rush circa 1980 - 1984? Lots of great short tracks on the four albums they released in that time:
The Spirit Of Radio
Freewill
Tom Sawyer
YYZ
Limelight
Red Barchetta
Subdivisions
The Analog Kid
Distant Early Warning
Red Sector A
etc

Hatfield and the North have more than a couple short songs. Some do not exceed the 30 second mark.
Some personal favorite short songs of mine include Aerosol Grey Machine and Bow Tie Daddy, both no longer than a minute.

I like very much Wait for Sleep by Dream Theater. However, usually I like songs longer, there's more room to develop the music and make it greater. But it's not a requisit, it's better to make the song short if it is a good song and doesn't have enough ideas to make it longer. Moonchild for me is a good example of this, if it stayed within the first 3 or 4 minutes it would be a very nice song. As it is, most people find it utterly boring (though some people do like it). For me Take a Pebble, without the long middle section, would be better (but surely there are many many people who do like it just the way it is and would think that what I'm saying is blasphemy).

Pink Floyd's The Wall is also a good example of prog double album in which nearly all songs are under the 5 min mark.
Even the elaborated The Trial is just over 5 minutes long.
