Topic: Prog Rock Festivals for Kayo Dot? Posted: April 13 2010 at 23:59 |
Hello Everyone! First of all I just wanted to say THANKS for all the positivity and support the ProgArchives.com community has thrown in the direction of my bands KAYO DOT and MAUDLIN OF THE WELL over the years. You guys are the best!
Secondly, I'm posting here because I'm looking for some recommendations of Prog Rock fests that might be suitable for Kayo Dot to try to play. We have a new album (Coyote) coming out just this week, and we've been wracking our brains for years (with little success) trying to figure out what channels would best fit our music. It seems like, mostly, the modern prog rock community is pretty enthusiastic about us, so we would really like to play more in this world if we can. I don't know where to begin though! What prog rock festivals (any country) should we apply to? Any and all help is greatly appreciated! THANKS! -toby Edited by tobydriver - April 14 2010 at 00:00 |

Toby, so glad to have you onboard!
We'd love to see you in Norway, though unfortunately there are no sizable prog festivals around. Does it have to be a prog rock festival though? Øyafestivalen (www.oyafestivalen.com) is Norway's largest and most progressive in the wide sense of the word, has tons of bands from a wide range of genres, and is usually very open towards prog- and experimental bands. Bit late for this year's festival perhaps, but I know they are not finished with their booking, so give it a try! Sweden Rock Festival (www.swedenrock.com) is another festival which is mainly aiming wider than prog but still including a lot of prog rock acts. Good luck, hope to see you on one of them! (If you're interested in playing smaller venues in Oslo, I might be able to give you a couple of advice too.) |

So cool to see Toby on these boards!
First off, I'm a huge fan of your works. I practically worship all four of maudlin's albums. Second, we'd love to have you visit the Midwest USA sometime. There aren't a whole lot of prog rock festivals here (the biggest one, the Milwaukee Art Rock Showcase, is now defunct.) We do have Milwaukee Noise Fest which plays artists of a more similar vein. If it doesn't have to be strictly prog festivals, there's always Lolla in Chicago (they might be booked already) or Summerfest in Milwaukee, both of which would be great ways to help widen the band's fanbase. |

Hi Toby,
Nice to have you around! Can't wait to get my Coyote preorder, too I'll drop a couple of suggestions for Paris/France. First, you might be interested in doing a solo show in Paris. There aren't huge crowds for contemporary experimental rock concerts, but there is a small and steady public going to such events, at the smaller venues. I've seen Tortoise gathering about 700 people at L'Alhambra (seems like their website is only in French: http://www.alhambra-paris.com/), Jaga Jazzist filling the Cafe de la Danse with about 400 people (http://www.cafedeladanse.com/node/7), or Ulver bringing about 1000 people at the Glazart (but this is a bigger venue and they're not relevant because almost all the audience consisted of metalheads). There are many other such venues where during this season we had Mono, Russian Circles, Battles, Do Make Say Think, A Silver Mt Zion,, etc. If interested, I can search for the info of these venues. Also, there is a small club in Paris called Le Triton who does a "progressive festival" called Les Tritonales each June. The "festival" means that they have a small place (for maximum 200 people) and there are solo concerts all weekends during that month. Last year they had bands like Magma, Univers Zero, Aranis, etc. They are really pro; they also have recording studios, all facilities for filming, record label, etc. Here is this years' line-up: http://www.letriton.com/Temps%20forts/tritonales2010.html In southern France there is also the RIO festival, where they are also interested in contemporary bands. This year they're having Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, for example. Here is their English website: http://www.rocktime.org/rio/accueileng.html This would have been my first recommendation but the line-up seems to be pretty finalized. But do send them a proposal! La Route du Rock is a indie/epxerimental festival in western France, by the Ocean. They also do booking for bands so who knows... They have summer sessions and winter sessions; last summer I wanted to go and see Tortoise, but didn't so I can't tell how it was like. Here's the English website: http://www.laroutedurock.com/pages/english.htm The 2010 summer line-up is not announced yet! If you plan to go further to the East, I would recommend Budapest (Hungary), there are tons of experimental events there. I would recommend Diesel Club (http://www.dieselclub.hu/?p=4), West Balkan (http://www.west-balkan.com/index.php?&el_mcal_month=4&el_mcal_year=2010) or Tuzrakter (http://tuzraktar.hu/). For Bucharest (Romania) I would recommend Club Control (http://www.control-club.ro/); they have bands like Lydia Lunch, Blurt, Legendary Pink Dots or Ken Vandermark & Paal Nilssen-Love. |

Very cool to see one of the most talented musicians around on the forum. I can't wait to hear Coyote and hopefully i'll get to see you guys at SxSw next year. I would recommend the Nearfest. It's in mid June in Bethlehem,Pennsylvania which is not too far form your neck of the woods. It is widely considered by many to be one of,if not the, largest Prog festivals in the world and by far the largest in the states. Can't wait to see you guys soon in support of the what will most certainly be the amazing Coyote album soon! |

I was thinking the same thing about NEARfest, if not this year then maybe next year? It might be too late now...

Hi Toby, welcome to PA!
As far as the UK goes our biggest festival is Summers End held in Lydney, near Glocester, at the start of October. Not exactly huge but it does fill the hall with about 400 people each day of the fest, which is about as much as you can hope for in this country. Mostly features your standard type of prog rock band but have been known to venture out into the more experimentel areas of prog a few times.
They've only got half of the festival line up sorted so far so its worth a try to get on the line up. You can contact the organisers Steve and Huw through the festivals myspace at www.myspace.com/summersendfestival and maybe through the website www.summersend.co.uk (though this hasnt been updated since last years festival, apparently they're working on a new one), and you can tell them there's at least one long time festival goer that would really love to see KD play there.

In the USA you will get your most bang for your buck with these festivals:
1. Nearfest http://www.nearfest.com/
The biggest. 2 Day with preshow Friday night. Usually in June
2. ROSfest http://www.rosfest.com/
Rites of Spring. Usually caters to a Neoprog crowd but they have different styles there. End of April/Beg of May
3. ProgDay http://www.progday.net/
North Carolina two day outdoor festival to end the Summer on Labor Day (First weekend in Sept)
4. Calprog http://www.calprog.com/
1 Day festival in October with 4 bands with a Friday preshow. Good promoter and facilities and really the only one on the West Coast worth speaking of. Promoter does "one off" shows in other months. Check out he website. Edited by Garion81 - April 14 2010 at 17:39 |

Well I live in Madison, so this would be a dream come true... the last time I had a chance to see anything Toby-related was maudlin of the well at the Milwaukee Metalfest (I believe it was '99?). Really wish I had seen that- probably one of the few performances for motw.
I think all of the best contributions and suggestions have already been made, I'm just another fan adding my adulation to the mix. Really looking forward to Coyote and the live cd-r....
good luck finding the right venues/festivals. I hope to see you guys one day.
