Click on nickname - drop down menu - add to buddy list.
Even simpler if you use the memberlist, there's the "add buddy" button.

^ Thanks! On the buddy list page what do the 'description' and 'status' buttons refer to? Also, i see an 'allow to contact me' or something to that effect; how does this differ from a PM? Sorry for being dim!

The description is for your own use to describe your buddy, or maybe why he/she is your buddy. I'm not sure why "allow to contact me" would be different from PM however, unless it is a way to block somebody who isn't a buddy from PMing you.

Description means just that - or giving the member a nickname. It doesn't appear to be essential.
Don't know myself the difference regarding PM and status. Haven't used the buddy function except one time, a long time ago. I think its use itself is questionable, but given that it's an old function, who knows what it precisely served back then.

The buddy tool is also useful for blocking people from contacting you. For example if someone is spamming or flaming you by PM, you can block all PMs from that person.
