My band instructor is asking me to play guitar for the schools marching band.
Should i accept or not?
Also, what are some good (prog) songs that would fit in a marching band environment (That utalize guitar)?

Hmm, are you going to go electric and strap an battery powered amp to yourself?

You know, I haven't even thought about that.
Probably, that would make the most sense.

There's always the transmitter option if the marching is going to be done in a stadium of sorts and you tie into a PA system.  If in a parade though, I don't see any more practical option than strapping a battery powered amp on.  I don't think you could get the volume out an acoustic guitar to compete with the other band players even if you played it really hard.

As far as musical selections go, there is the occasional prog song that has been used in conjunction with sports...

Usually guitar and bass in marching band situations are used with the percussion "pit" section and play at the edge of the field near the director's podium rather than being out on the field.  They don't march parade.

That would be cool if the guitarists did march though.  Have them out front playing their guitars, and then twirling them like batons when they aren't playing.  LOL

Shows how much I know about guitars in marching bands.  But of marching bands aren't actually marching they aren't actually a marching band nor if individuals that are actually part of a marching band are not actually marching then and as I was born in march after all granted at the end of march I should get to have some say on this.  (OK this might have made more sense if I had used more commas and been more coherent, I hope the parentheses actually helped clarify things.)

Having said that, it would have to be prog for me to play any instrument in a marching band particularly one that doesn't actually do any marching.  Sheesh!

My band instructor has a high-power amp that he would probably let me use.
Or i could use my vyper.

I don't know if a marching band could pull it off, but Bruford's Joe Frazier would be really cool.  ELP has a lot of bombastic stuff (I believe some of Tank has been used for a sports show theme music), which I think would suit a marching band.  The challenge is finding something adaptable to a group that might not be particularly virtuostic, not to cast aspersions on your rellow band members capabilities.

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I'm not sure what you're wanting to find out. At my school we generally have guitar in the pit in our marching band and the director writes out the chords they play and then between the director and the guitarist they find ways to fit it into the music, since the show music rarely includes guitar. However we're only a 3A school so I'm not sure if your school would be better off doing that for competitions. Anyways, you should ask your director what your school's playing for the show and ask him the logistics of you playing.

I've been in marching band for three years and I can do nothing but reccomend it. I've only marched once because other times I've been in the pit. It is a fun (time consuming) thing I think you should try out for sure.
