http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=4101 Volumes 1-3 Do you think that it should remain in studio album ? I would move it to compilations section, but you know, it was added by ProgLucky, so I rather ask the crowd here. |

The Enid are a difficult one. In the 1980s they were dropped from the major labels and released all their albums through their fan club (The Stand - formerly The Enid Appreciation Society). In reality they were self-released albums, but many years before this became the norm. The are called "fan club" releases and should theoretically be listed as such, but I think they would be better under Studio, Live and Compilations.
Everything after Six Pieces was released in this way (and all their albums have been re-released that way too, just to confuse things further). Some of the albums we have listed as Studio albums are original material, some are compilations and some are live recordings.

This is my first-pass guess - any one want to give alternatives?
Studio
Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983) (ENID 3) Salome (1986) (ENID 10) The Seed and the Sower (originally released as by Godfrey and Stewart) (1988) Tripping the Light Fantastic (1994) Sundialer (1995) White Goddess (1997) Tears of the Sun (1999) Live
The Stand (1984) Compilation
The Stand (1985) Lovers And Fools (double retrospective compilation) (1986) Anarchy on 45 (singles compilation) (1996) Healing Hearts (compilation by Matthew Manning) (1996) An Alternative History Vol 1-3 (1998)
Singles/Fan Club
The Spell (1985) (ENID 8) (originally released as a double-45 rpm album) Fand (Special Extended Re-recording) (1985) Members one of Another (compilation, fanclub's choice) (1996) Edited by Dean - January 05 2010 at 13:48 |

Well, the problem is bigger than I though, but gets more interesting. Good that we stumbled over it. By my opinion (I don't know them all, so I have to guess sometimes): An Alternative History Vol 1-3 (1998) would fit in COMPILATIONS so I moved them for now Both Stands seems like COMPILATIONs to me, so I'll leave 1984 where it is now until we discuss it and move 1985 Anarchy On 45 - moved to COMPILATION Lovers And Fools - also COMPILATION Healing Hearts - COMPILATION Members one of Another (compilation, fanclub's choice) - clear SINGLES/FANCLUB |

^ The first Stand is a live album according to whoever added it to the PA... I'm not sure which one I have (I may have both ) unfortunately I cannot get to them at the moment to check.

I have just "LIVE AT HAMMERSMITH" and this link isn't so helpful http://www.amazon.com/Stand-1984-1985-Enid/dp/B000N3SXK8%3FSubscriptionId%3D1XQB0RHSKVPAJR0A1F82%26tag%3Dprogarchive01-20%26linkCode%3Dsp1%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB000N3SXK8 However, we can move it. As you said, it's confusing, so we'll consider these independent releases as solid studio albums, to differ them from their "more" fan/compilation/live releases. |

^ I was at that Hammersmith gig - front row
I've just notice that the full title of the The Stand (1985) album is possibly The Stand (Members One Of Anther) ... though that would confuse it with the other Members One Of Another compilation. Looks like it is part live, part unreleased tracks ... or a compilation

I've encountered only two prog gigs in my life, both this autumn (Progres 2 & Uz jsme doma, all of them Czech bands), I hesitated whether to go for July Prague Dream Theater one, but it was too little time back then. I'll go in future. You for sure has a lot of great memories on these gigs you've witnessed, so let me ask one question: Is it worth the money, this memory that you can just remember (not capture, or at least mostly not capture), spending let's say 40 bucks to see your favourite group performing. And then again, again, hundreds of gigs. So is it worth ? I'm unexperienced in this topic. This confused me even more, so I'm listening White Goddess to calm a little bit. Pleasing one, even more than some of their "first era" studio ones. Even more than SIX PIECES (!) for me. |

Ha! Yes it is worth every penny. I can remember a lot of that Hammersmith gig eventhough it was >30 years ago now - it was a special gig - they recieved a 20 minute standing ovation at the end. Then I can remember something of every gig I've ever attended over the years, even the bad ones. Somewhere in the forum I've listed some of the hundreds of bands I've seen live and eventhough you cannot capture that experience (even the live albums don't capture the full experience) it is still worth the time and money for the experience itself and the memories you take away.

This helped me to be sure. I'll pursue this path, even I started quite old in age (say, start to attending gigs in age 20 isn't normal). Thanks. I still remember my three, so I'll better write about them too. But what about The Enid, let it be as it is now ? Seems "mostly" well to me. Only mostly because I'm not sure about some. BTW capturing the experience, I've recorded with video capturing software my yesterday's writing of White Goddess review :-D crazy thing to do, but quite unique I suppose. |
