Well, today marks the blessed birth of Jimbo Morrison...or rather, yesterday did. Oh well. Bit of a national holiday for the city of Los Angeles really (or, rather, me. And one guy I saw on the big blue bus who had a Doors shirt on today as well).

So, since it's always something I wanted to do, I propose a contest of Doors Blues. Which is the best? Which can you choose? Something straightforward, like "Back Door Man," "Crawling King Snake" or "Been Down So Long?" Something apocalyptic, like "Roadhouse Blues," "Maggie M'gill" or "Cars Hiss By My Window?" Something Gothic like "Love Me Two Times," "The Spy" or "Who Do You Love?" Or...well, I guess that's it then.

Of course it's not though; I mean, they practically WERE a blues band live, and there's probably some b-sides and non-Morrison numbers I'm forgetting/purposefully avoiding. Oh, and, "Shaman's Blues." Except it wasn't really blues.

And myself? Hmm...dunno exactly. I suppose the wilder the better, but honestly, every one of those tracks has enough atmosphere to make it special in some way. "Who Do You Love?"

(Oh, and, I'm aware that this should be in proto...so that's cool.)

I voted for The Spy and think the Doors a decent blues band (when Jimbo was up enough to be down)
However, it's the more acid rock/psychedlia/oriental hued tracks that make their contribution to music unique IMO

Been Down So Long was probably their bluesy best.

well i can only remember to have hear LIght my Fire (and remember it afterwards have heard som other the Doors albums but i cind of unexperienced on that band, i shoul probably sheck out some more of their work)

but the Hammond solo on Light my Fire is legendary and a wonderfull epic song (one of the first real progressive songs I heard before i knew of the genre Prog that and Elton Johns Funural For a Frien/Love Lies Bleeding )

Backdoor Man is a pretty great song.
I prefer some other Doors songs over it, but it wins this poll for me.

I can't believe 'Roadhouse Blues' is winning: the most awful, predictable, commercial blues attempt they ever did.

However, they were good at many things - blues being one of them. Almost all of the options are great, but I will discount "Who Do You Love" which was Dixon's tune (IIRC) and 'Crawling King Snake' which is a bit hermetic for my taste.
Of all other each one is okay in its own right but my faves are social 'Maggie M'Gill' (why am I always picturing young Janine Turner?) with its excellent rhythmical hook, and 'The Spy' for it's haziness.

Roadhouse blues, because it was one of the first songs I learned to play on the guitar.

Not a Doors composition, but they do a decent job on Back Door Man.  I suppose the more correct answer, almost hinted at, is that they weren't really a very good blues band compared to many of their contemporaries who also dabbled in the genre.
Can you tell me where we're headin'?
Lincoln County Road or Armageddon.

"Cars Hiss By My Window", can't get more bluesy than that...well... most on that list, including "Crawling King Snake" my second favourite.

Maybe because the guitar solo has been known to make infants grow facial hair?
