Get any basic book from the library...the basics of singing are two things...ear / pitch and breath control. Start with practicing getting nice clear tones accurately on simple melodies without backing.

In my experience, singing is more about experience than theory.
You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

use a digital mike or tape recorder to sing into then listen to yourself , i wish X  Factor contestants did this - then hardly any of them would turn up  Ermm

your voice sounds totally different to others,  you will learn a lot from this.

I, too, have been trying to learn to sing and I also play guitar.  I picked up one of these things:

The Boss RC - 20 XL.  They are kinda pricey but damn worth it.  One of the many features are separate inputs for both the guitar and microphone that can been turned up or down.  It's helped me a lot.  Definitely recommended, if you can afford it.

Singing for much of the time is a process of trial and error as everyone has different physical boundaries and various strong and weak points to thier vocals. Start with uncomplicated songs then progress to more difficult works as you become comfortable with your perfomance in previous songs. Try different styles of rock vocal during your progression so as to find what comes naturally to you, this will allow you to develop both your strong and weak points simultaneously thus making you a more well rounded vocalist. Also, practice as often as you can, preferably doing the scales to begin with, sing 'using your diaphragm' (muscles between lungs and stomach) for strength in your voice. I hope this is useful for you.
