Hi,
This is my first post here, I cruise the main site all the time, but don't really check out the forums. I figured I could get some suggestions from you guys in finding some new music.
I work in a record shop, it's not a bad setup, the only problem, there are all sorts of rules and regulations with the music we play. The rule "no weird stuff" was invented specifically for me. I was flattered.
The prog I tend to dig often ventures into the experimental realm: Can, Faust, Henry Cow (and various side projects), Soft Machine (and various side projects), Magma, Hawkwind, Zappa, Beefheart, even Gentle Giant and Van Der Graaf Generator often fall into the too weird catagory, not consistantly but often enough that I couldn't play an entire album from either... well truthfully the only VDGG album I'm overly familiar with is Godbluff. I made a playlist of various prog tunes that aren't too edgey.
Early Genesis, Jethro Tull, Yes, stuff like this is fine, but I feel like I've played those three bands especially too much lately. Not that I listen to exclusively prog at work, but when I am in the mood, I blank on stuff I can actually play at work.
Aparently if regular people are exposed to strange and unusal music, they will start jumping out the windows, eating their children and so on, so help me find some good prog that won't give grandma nightmares.
A couple of suggestions: - Available on Rhapsody? That would be an added bonus, we have Rhapsody at work and to be able to stream in no problem would be awesome. I can get it myself and bring it into work, but if it's on Rhapsody it would be easier. - No Dream Theater esque stuff. No offense to the band or fans, but I personally can't stand this type of music. This is basically the only branch of prog that I can not get into at all. I can't really explain why. This would also be just about the limitations of the heaviness I can play. I can play realitively heavy music, but no screaming vocals.
That was a long post for my first one, yeesh. Even if a band seems like an obvious choice, suggest it! I appreciate the help.
