I would like to make a short tread about some gems, i haven’t seen mentioned on PA. Embarrassed

Robbie Robertson, selftitled album from 1987

Recorded at: “Ashcombe House” Peter Gabriel's home and recording studio at the time the album was recorded.

Produced by Daniel Lanois at the time. U2 were recording The Joshua Tree and Gabriel was recording So

This recording was the first solo album RR made after his many years in The band.

Apart from Fripp’s Exposure i cant remember i’we ever seen a Personel list as this one.

Personnel

Robbie Robertson – vocals, backing vocals, guitar, keyboards

Manu Katché – drums on 1 2 6 7 8, percussion on 1 7 8

Bill Dillon – guitars on 1 2 5 6 7 8 9, backing vocal on 2

Tony Levin – Chapman Stick on 5 7, bass on 6 8

Daniel Lanois – percussion on 2 3 4 8, backing vocal on 2 3 4, Omnichord on 5, guitar on 5 8

Additional personnel

Tinker Barfield – bass on 1 5

Martin Page – drum programming on 1

Garth Hudson – keyboards on 1 5

Peter Gabriel – keyboards on 1 3, vocal on 1, drum program on 3

Larry Klein – bass on 2

BoDeans (Sam Llanas, Kurt Neumann) – backing vocals on 2 5

Sammy BoDean (Sam Llanas) – backing vocal on 6

Terry Bozzio – drums on 3 5

Abraham Laboriel – bass on 3

Larry Mullen Jr. – drums on 4 9

Adam Clayton – bass on 4 9

The Edge – guitar on 4 9

Bono – vocals, bass on 4, backing vocal on 9, guitar on 9

Hans Christian – bass guitar on 5

Maria McKee – backing vocal on 5

Cary Butler – backing vocal on 8

Ivan Neville – backing vocal on 9

Gil Evans Horn Section – horns on 9

Rick Danko - backing vocal on 8

RR music writing and poetry is strong all the way, an album without any fillers.

In general the album is in a Rock style not far from the one U2’s got on their best Albums.

But this is still more varied than any U2 album, and especialy Manu Katche’s / Terry Bozzio drums and Tony Levin’s Bass, lift this album to a level of its own.

Fallen Angle

A Track sounding as if it would be the unrealeased track from Peter Gabriel’s So.

RR’s vocal is beatutiful on this one, and the PG backing vocal makes it a collecters must have.

Showdown At Big Sky

A short clip from the track here (not the bast sound) :

Not the best song on the album, but still a solid Rock song, liftet by great Manu Katche drums

Somewhere Down That Crazy River, defenitly the less prog related song, but as i cant find links to other better tracks

The The , Mind Bomb

I Can Understand why The The , is not featured at PA, in general the albums are more alternative

than prog.

But Mind Bomb is a fantastic 80’s album, and i think it could easy qualify as prog.

It features ex. The Smith guitarist Johnny Marr, playing one great  harmonica solo after the other.

The list of instruments used are very long, as shown below.

As allways Johnsons songs are Dark enough to make Waters light.

The band

Matt Johnson – Vocals, guitar, keyboards

Johnny Marr – guitar, harmonica

James Eller – bass guitar

Dave Palmer – drums

Additional musicians

Sinéad O'Connor - Female vocal on "Kingdom of Rain"

Wix - Piano/Keyboards/Hammond Organ/Accordion

Warne Livesy - Keyboards/Banjo/Acoustic Guitar

Pandit Dinesh - Percussion

Danny Cummings - Percussion

Pedro Haldermann - Percussion

Chris White - Saxophone

Philip Todd - Saxophone

Ashley Slater - Trombone

John Eacott - Flugel Horn

Mark Feltham - Harmonica

Danny Thompson - Upright Bass on "August & September"

Sarah Homer - Clarinet

Dai Pritchard - Bass Clarinet

Hilary Storer - Oboe

Gavin Wright - Arabian Fiddle

Astarti String Section – Strings

IMO this is the best recordings made in the 80’s, showing a diffrent way of alternative, not prog.

Not punk, not heavy. But definately Rock with an edge.

Don't be disheartened Tamijo, some people have busy lives and others fill the emptiness to overflowing.
This band were from Birmingham UK and their only album is kinda proto-proggy with jazz flourishes via the horns but more importantly, has FANTASTIC lyrics, songwriting and tonsilry from Norman Haines. Wor Norm followed this up in the early 70's with a decent but not brilliant Norman Haines Band LP Den of Iniquity.

This is one of my favourite albums of all time (I kid ye not, scoffing knaves) and I was surprised it was not listed on 'PA' (Which begs the question I concede, why don't I submit it for inclusion ?)

That Robbie Robertson album looks interesting. How about this one:

CDBaby: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bobharris/from/mikeenregalia
eMusic.com: http://www.emusic.com/album/Bob-Harris-The-Great-Nostalgia-MP3-Download/11181305.html

Bob Harris was in Zappa's band in the 80s, and this album (his only solo album) is from 1986. I've posted a comment here:

^ It's a true gem ... it was recently re-released on CD after having been out of print for about 20 years. If you like the samples I recommend you download it at eMusic.com ... it only costs a couple of bucks there.Smile
