For the last few month I havent bought anything apart from Progressive cds, but now I am looking for some new classical/psychedelic rock. Bands that I already like are: Bealtes and their solo careers, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Deep purple, The Who. Also Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and sometimes Metallica and Black Sabbath I need to expand my non prog collection and need some advice. Classical rock and Psychedelic rock prefferalby with a prog feel to it, if you know what i mean. Three bands I cant stand are Rolling stones, Nirvana, and Guns and roses. Overrated, please dont mention. Thanks in advance. Edited by Dreamer |

You have to go for Wagner for that one - vast sprawling epics, absolute nonsensical concepts, either love him or hate him... Sounds like prog rock to me ![]() |

Try The Doors, and if you are a truly investigative person, try argentinan band Soda Stereo.

Three words... PROKOFIEV PIANO SONATAS!!!!!!! Oh yeah, and Shostakovich is worth checking out. Oh, and if you don't have a copy of the original piano version of Pictures at an Exhibition, you need to get one. The orchestrated version is cool too. Rachmanninov had some good material, and Tchichovsky (excuse my spelling) wrote some great symphonies, especially his later ones. These recommendations are all Russian, and any music that came out of Russia during the Romantic period is worth having. |

Have you heard much from steve vai? his music definitely has some prog feel to it, and he's one of the most talented guitarists i've ever heard. Try to find "For the love of god" or the jazzy "Tendur Surrendur". Vai definitely did a great thing when he left Whitesnake to go solo!!

sorry for the mistake i meant classical rock, but i will check out the classical composers you told me, since it also interests me. I know some steve Vai songs and was thinking about buying an album, but I started thinking it might be too guitar orientated, and I dont play guitar. What would be a good album to start with? Who are these Soda stereo? I've downloaded a song, but it sounded abit too 80's for me. recomendations are wellcome. |

Try Savoy brown: a very good blues rock band or Budgie: A classical trio hard rock band!

The Jefferson Airplane would be a good choice. The best album for introductory purporses would be "The Worst Of Jefferson Airplane" from 1970. As this album will show you, there is a lot more to the Airplane than Grace Slick and White Rabbit / Somebody To Love. This was a very talented psychedelic band that I was listening to in High School (1987) the same time I was listening to ELP and YES. For more current music, you might also want to check out The Tea Party, from Canada. Edited by Grimm |

Surrealistic Pillow or Crown Of Creation. I still recommend The Worst Of Jefferson Airplane, though; It's not your ordinary compilation. It's widely considered to be a true - to - life sampling of the bands most important years. The Airplane were the kind of band that had a good, signature sound. Like King Crimson mark III and Gabriel's Genesis, they had a sound that was good by itself. They just sounded good no matter what they were playing. If you go to the offical website http://www.jeffersonairplane.com/index.html and click on listen, a jukebox will allow you to listen to full songs. |

Have you heard The Fire Theft - "s/t" or Sunny Day Real Estate - "The Rising Tide"? Both have a classic rock feel to them, but they're recent bands. I can't recommend them enough.

If you want that classic rock sound with a current band, try Gov't Mule. The rockers love them, metal heads love them, jam band nuts love them...
