Topic: who is the best Progressive pop/art Rock Posted: April 23 2009 at 21:20 |
Queen, Roxy Music, ELO, 10CC and Supertramp these quintet of bands i have allways thoght of a bit similar
some reasons for my thougts
1. never 100% regarded as prog but stil many progers (me included) like them 2 . have a share amount of pop influence mixd with Prog in different degree 3 . all have there higlight albums. 4. theatrical, opretic, dramatic and other thematics from stage related artforms 5 and all have given gratitude to the Beatles in som way
i could have included Alan Parsons Project, Sparks, Utopia and Wishbone Ash as well but those in the poll i think are closest match.
good luck

Supertramp first, ELO second. Tough battle there, really.... I'm still not sure about that.
I hate Queen. Not familiar really with Roxy or 10cc.

as i voted for Supertramp i dont regard them as influencuel in prog or genral music. that crown i will give both Queen and Roxy, but the fact is nearly evry new wave in 80s have ether Bowie, Roxy Music and Kraftwerk. wile Queen inspired as i know it DT in som way Saga and many others.

None of them are very innovative or progressive... influential, maybe. My vote is for ELO because I like them the best.

Montrealers like myself seem to be obsessed with Supertramp, which is where my vote went.

1 - Alan Parsons Project (sorry, my personal priorities preempted the poll's) 2 - Supertramp 3 - Queen 4 - Roxy Music 5 - ELO
Didn't rate 10cc, as I am not familiar with them.

Know Roxy well and love them long time. Supertramp, just recently familiar with Crime (like it) and their radio hits. Was an ELO fan of that spaceship album as a kid but lost interest. (also know radio hits) Familiar with Queen primarily with by hearing their hits ad nauseum. 10cc know by name but no music pops into my head that I know by name.

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Queen. Early material tops a lot of "100% prog" on PA.

As for me, Queen. They were the first rock band I really got into when I was around 11, and still love their music as much today as I did all those years ago. I'm also a big Roxy Music fan.
Never got into ELO or Supertramp. They're both ok, but that's it. Don't really know 10cc well enough to judge.

I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?

Although I voted for Roxy Music, I think on reflection that their influence is perhaps more palpable in the subsequent work of the Cure, Banshees, Joy Division et al
(I'm thinking of 'In Every Dream Home a Heartache' here y'all)

Supertramp are by far my favourite among the bands listed, followed by Roxy Music. I have never been able to really get into Queen, though I recognise they are a great band in many respects, and ELO (who are one of Micky's fav bands) leave me somewhat cold. As for 10cc, I know them very little, but I've always wanted to get to know them more.

On this list, Roxy Music are definitely my favorite. Of the criteria the OP laid out though, I'd have to say Split Enz are miles ahead of the rest.
