Topic: Favorite Record Labels? Posted: April 03 2009 at 00:35 |
I didn't use to pay much attention to labels, but I've been listening to more jazz and it's more important with them, so if you pay attention, which is your favorite? Of course, Tzadik, ReR, and Cuneiform are up there, but at the moment I have to go with Impulse! for sheer quanity of mind-blowing jazz. Hell, even just Ascension, Karma, Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, Albert Ayler At Greenwich Village is good enough. Signing ABBA outweighs Ornette Coleman for Atlantic, and I haven't gotten around to ESP and Black Saint/Soul Note yet.

Hydra Head is pretty good. All the post metal, sludge, mathcore 'n stuff on there I dig.

Oh yeah, I remember Hydra, they signed Kayo Dot. I like The End just for Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, which may not be entirely fair. And Sony Japan gets props for signing Boredoms, you rarely see music like that on a major label, besides things like Coltrane/Ornette on Atlantic.

Yes Hydrahead and Arts & Crafts are great. I also like these:
Relapse: easily the best extreme metal label. They tend to have a lot of forward-thinking groups on their roster. The current line-up includes Burst, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Minsk, Zombi, Baroness, Pig Destroyer, Genghis Tron, Buried Inside, Rwake and more. Past bands include Neurosis and Mastodon. Of course, they have a bunch of stuff I have no interest in, but usually if I hear about a new band signed to Relapse I'll check them out stat.
Constellation: mainly great for Godspeed, ASMZ and Do Make Say Think. They've put out some interesting stuff other than that, though, and I'm always open to hearing something they put out.
Temporary Residence: another great post-rock label. They've got Mono, Envy, Explosions in the Sky and Grails, among others.
Warp: clearly the best electronic music label out there. They've released stuff by Aphex Twin, Autechre, Squarepusher, Boards of Canada, and shoot, they've even released Grizzly Bear.
Sub Pop: one of the best, if not the best, indie rock labels out there currently. They've got Band of Horses, Iron & Wine, Fleet Foxes, The Shins, and Wolf Parade, and have released many many classic records of the past, from the likes of Nirvana, even.

Favourite is probably InsideOut as it has gathered most of the top prog bands nowadays...
Favourite metal ones: Century Media and Peaceville

As I'm also very much into jazz so I got to go for Impulse! Alice & John Coltrane, Sun Ra & Pharoah Sanders... A record label that has both Ornette Coleman and ABBA is fantastic too! Special mention to Herbie Manns Embryo which again was owned by Atlantic. Been buying loads of albums from Columbia and Blue Note to. Then there's Rune, Tzadik, Harvest, Charisma, Soleil Zeuhl, BYG, and ECM's five first years. I've forgot some I know, but I'm no expert.
