Yep, had enough of this crap.

Pot is next to harmless, everyone, and he should never have to apologize for smoking it. The only thing that's regrettable about his is that the witch hunt regarding something unjustifiably illegal.

I blame religion and old housewives, naturally.

U? Big smile

I wouldn't have apologized. He did nothing wrong.

He is a role model (according to the press) so yeah he does have a certain moral obligation to stay on the straight and narrow.

How about " I got photographed at a private party doing something that I do".

I'm with you Stoney.  The witch hunt has to stop eventually.  This world has real problems to solve, we need to quit worrying about what a 23 year old man chooses to do in his free time.

But it's illegal they cried!

So is speeding in your car.  How many people break that law?  How many people are killed by speeding drivers, alcohol, and cigarettes?   Compare those numbers to pot deaths worldwide.  I'm so sick and tired of the hypocrisy on this topic.

If no one cared about pot, as no one should, then this wouldn't get publicity and it would be a non-issue regarding his role model status.

We need public support for marijuana, so we can see it's not paralyzing and bad if someone physically excellent and a true role model in ways that is matters, not pointless anti-drug ways.

Well, the worst part is the guy attained the highest level of achievement in his field. All this DESPITE the fact that he likely has smoked pot before, although maybe no in training.

So who is going to be the kind soul to send him a sampler of prog to go with his weekend activities? Wink
Although I think this is a non-issue. Plenty of my friends smoke pot with no ill effects. I don't myself nor have I ever, but I am completely for the legalization of the stuff.
As for being a role model, he already got a DUI. That should dissuade some people from having him as a role model. Also, athletes that do nothing other than be good at sports are stupid role models anyway. Unless they are charitable and good people, they shouldn't have the attention of so many young-uns. I say get some scientist role models out there like Brian Greene or Neil DeGrasse Tyson.
Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal.

Oh noes, man who used pot.
Who gives a flying poo.....better yet, why should anyone give a flying poop.
I know people that did drugs for years and years and still do, that did extremely well at school and university, have great jobs that pay well and are happy with themselves.
It's about controlling your usage. As far as I see it, if you can control how you take drugs, they are fine really.
I use drugs (I'm not condoning it here, but I'm just saying though) but there is a huge difference between someone like me who uses them maybe less than 15 times a year and someone who abuses it daily to the extent where it begins to have serious negative effects on themselves and the world around them.

I'm a Christian who believes pot should be legalized and taxed like anything else.

I drink don't I?

Well I'm not angry at him for apologizing, but he shouldn't.  Its ridiculous.  SO WHAT.  So did the last few presidents, and quite possibly several before them.  It is something most Americans have done or would admit to.  Not to mention he won a ton of gold medals which clearly shows it didn't hurt his ability to be an incredible swimmer.  I guess its more infuriating that some people expect and apology from him for something that doesn't matter.

OH MY GOSH PHELPS SMOKED POT?!??! Now all the kids are going to be trying it if they haven't already and sit around for hours talking and eating various foods! WHAT WILL WE DO?!?!?! THE CHILDREAN! THE CHILDREN!!!!!!!!

This sort of discrimination sucks giant monkey balls. I've been fired from my last job for cleaning my bong in a store sink (it was a grocery store). Okay, it was dumb of me but i was off my shift AND have a medical marijuana permit(making it legal for me in CA).

In order to apologize for something, you have to do something wrong. He did NOTHING wrong. And neither did I.

A beer is more harmful to one's health than a bong hit.  DEA's own Administrative Law judge Francis L. Young said that "Marijuana, in its natural form, is one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man".
Discrimination is bullsh*tCry

If I was him I would tell everyone to go f**k themselves, not apologize.

BTW my bong is nicer(and cleaner) than Phelps'sTongueTongue

I doubt it was descrimination. I am nearly positive you still would have been fired if you had been cleaning out a giant tobacco pipe. Or washing out your bottles of vodka.

Um, I never said anything about washing out vodka bottlesConfusedLOL In fact, I hate hard alcohol. Bongs are infinitely reusable but need to be kept clean.

Naturally.

I think it's about taking responsibility for your own actions. If sometihng is illegal (whether that's right or wrong is irrelevent) and you get caught doing it, there will be consequences.  There is absoloutely no point in saying "yeah but....." from here to kingdom come. Take personal responsibility for your actions.... all of them.

From the Site Rules & Guidelines:

Quote 5. No Illegal activities. Posts and threads promoting or facilitating file swapping, drug abuse, or any other forum of illegal activity are not permitted. Any such posts will be deleted

This is one of those issues which polarise opinions, but the bottom line is drug use is illegal in most places, & as such this thread is now closed.
