 Topic: The Devil vs. Johnny

In case you haven't figured it out, I mean "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" by Charlie Daniels.
What I want to know is, "Who played the better part?"

a CDB question on prog archives, I'll be damned. praise be to the ultimate southern rock band who are just impressive today in concert as any band you'd hope to see. as for the question: on studio releases it's even but the live edge is certainly Johnny's.

Without being blasphemous, I always though the Devil had a real grove going, to be honest.
By the way, have any of you heard "The Devil Comes Back to Georgia?" It's done by Mark O' Connor (freaking fiddle wizard, that one), Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, and Charlie himself.

The devil totally wins. Supposedly Johnny wins the golden fiddle, but the jokes on Johnny. A golden fiddle HAS NO FREAKING SUSTAIN!!!

I love Cash's voice on anything but I do think the addition of Travis Tritt and Marty Stuart (not Robbins) as the Devil and Johnny was a bit much. O'Conner should have left it at Cash, Daniels, and himself. Be interested in knowing from whomever posts here what their favorite CDB song is and whether or not they believe any of him songs has prog elements. Tough choice for me but I'd have to go with Cumberland Mountain Number Nine off of Fire On The Mountain, at least at this moment.

Stuart! Right. I knew Robbins didn't sound right. And I'd forgotten Tritt's on there. I knew I was leaving someone off.
By the way, on that same album by O'Connor, there's an instrumental entitled "New County." That's the damnedest fiddling I've ever heard- I've attempted to learn it on the guitar.
I really like The Charlie Daniels Band.
I really like the jingoistic "In America." The guitar riff is awesome on that. I also like "Feelin' Free" (which Daniels doesn't actually sing on- someone else does).
Pretty much the whole Fire On the Mountain is good.
Every time my dad's side has a family get-together, my uncle gets drunk and plays "Long Haired Country Boy."

I think Johnny is better. So good in fact that I nominate him for inclusion on PA.
My dad got to interview Charlie Daniels when he was in college. I love telling people that.
