what are some of your favorite lyrics in all of music that remain succinct enough to be said in just a few lines?give line, artist, and song please. some of my personal favorites(and examples of what i mean):
"the face in the mirror wont stop"-the doors(jim) when the music's over
"i was blind all the time i was learning to see"-grateful dead- help on the way
"we dont want the monsters takin over....tiptoe around and tie them down"-radiohead-go to sleep
"and its too late to lose the weight you used to need to throw around" pink floyd-dogs(i think, i know its from animals but those songs kinda run together lyrically)
"the clouds will part and the sky cracks open and god himself will reach his f**king arm through...just to push you down...just to hold you down"-nine inch nails-the wretched

"And what touches our soul
slowly moves
as touch rebounds
And to know that tempo
will continue lost in a trance of dancers
As is my want, I only reach to look in your eyes."

I've just gotten into the music of Kevin Gilbert in hte last couple of months and his stuff is full of brillitant lyrics.

From Goodness Gracious

Goodness gracious, we came in at the end!

No sex that isn't dangerous, no money left to spend

We're the clean-up crew for parties, we were too young to attend

edit: sorry, did't read your post carefully.

There are many brilliant lyrical lines I love, but I think of one at the moment:

"... And the meek shall inherit the earth..."

I bet you know it's from RUSH - "2112".

I embrace my desire to
feel the rhythm, to feel connected enough to step aside and weep like a widow
to feel inspired to fathom the power, to witness the beauty,
to bathe in the fountain,
to swing on the spiral
to swing on the spiral
to swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human.

With my feet upon the ground I move myeslf between the sounds and open wide to suck it in.
I feel it move across my skin.
I'm reaching up and reaching out. I'm reaching for the random or what ever will bewilder me.
what ever will bewilder me.
And following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been.
We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been.
Spiral out. Keep going.
Spiral out. Keep going.
Spiral out. Keep going.
Spiral out. Keep going.
Spiral out. Keep going.

"With glory and passion no longer in fashion" The Pinnacle by Kerry Livgren (KANSAS)

A good decription for prog music!

And a few favorites by N. Peart (RUSH):

"[...]
So much style without substance
So much stuff without style
It's hard to recognize the real thing
It comes along once in a while
[...]
Shapes and forms
Against the norms -
Against the run of the mill
Swimming against the stream
Life in two dimensions
Is a mass production scheme

So much poison in power
The principles get left out
Som much mind over matter
The spirit gets forgotten about
[...]"

"More than just sutvival
More than just a flash
More than just a dotted line
More than just a dash"

"Mystic rhythms
Capture my thoughts
Carry them away
Nature seems to spin
A supernatural way
Mystic rhythms
Under city lights
Or a canopy of stars
We feel the push and pull of restless rhythms from afar"

Let's try this again

An old favorite of mine as far as Fish is concerned, is this  one. From Script for a jester's tear (the song)

So I'll hold my peace forever, as you wear your bridal gown

and the silence of my shame, the muse that sang the siren song

Has gone solo, in the game

Someone once told me that this is actually quite similar to a Peter Hamill lyric on one of his solo albums.   The one that's on the cover of Marillion's Fugazi, somewhere on the ground.

The day the Circus of Heaven came to town
Local folks lined the streets in a Midwestern town
Waiting anxiously for the parade to begin all round
On the very last day

A Unicorn headed the Mystical way

Surrounded by what seemed a thousand golden angels at play
Behind were Centaurs, elves, bright fairies all in colours of Jade
On the very final day

For what seemed only just a moment in time
Seven solemn flying silvered regal horses rode by
Seven golden chariots in tow, a wonder to behold
The Seven Lords of the Mountains of time

There then arose where nothing really stood there before
A giant tent rising one thousand feet high from the floor
Towns people flocked inside with their eyes all amazed
To greet the Seventh Lord of the Seventh age

A fanfare rang out in an incredible sound
Bringing out the strangest visions perfect harmony round
Any dreams he asked would they like to have seen
From historical or mythical scenes

Then there above their heads just as vivid as life
Each vision transported in multitudes inventing light
Grecian galleons, The Sack of Troy, to the Gardens of Babylon
A play of millions roared along

The gigantic dreams of Alexander the Great
Civil wars where brothers fought and killed their friendship in hate
All seen by Zeus performing scenes of the magical way
The day the circus came to town

Outside great animals as tame as the trees
Angels high in starlight dancing streets
Tuning their colours with indigo and gold
Dropping violet, red and emerald snow
As the circus finally changed its invisible course
A new world to be found

On the dreamy ground we walked upon
I turned to my son and said
"Was that something beautiful, amazing, wonderful, extraordinary beautiful?"
"Oh! it was OK!! But there were no clowns, no tigers, lions or bears,
candy-floss, toffee apples, no clowns."

Yes - Tormato - Circus Of Heaven

The best one:

I don't know just where I'm going
But I'm gonna try for the kingdom, if I can
'Cause it makes me feel like I'm a man
When I put a spike into my vein
And I'll tell ya, things aren't quite the same
When I'm rushing on my run
And I feel just like Jesus' son
And I guess that I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know

I have made the big decision
I'm gonna try to nullify my life
'Cause when the blood begins to flow
When it shoots up the dropper's neck
When I'm closing in on death
And you can't help me now, you guys
And all you sweet girls with all your sweet talk
You can all go take a walk
And I guess that I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know

I wish that I was born a thousand years ago
I wish that I'd sail the darkened seas
On a great big clipper ship
Going from this land here to that
In a sailor's suit and cap
Away from the big city
Where a man can not be free
Of all of the evils of this town
And of himself, and those around
Oh, and I guess that I just don't know
Oh, and I guess that I just don't know

Heroin, be the death of me
Heroin, it's my wife and it's my life
Because a mainer to my vein
Leads to a center in my head
And then I'm better off and dead
Because when the smack begins to flow
I really don't care anymore
About all the Jim-Jim's in this town
And all the politicians makin' crazy sounds
And everybody puttin' everybody else down
And all the dead bodies piled up in mounds

'Cause when the smack begins to flow
Then I really don't care anymore
Ah, when the heroin is in my blood
And that blood is in my head
Then thank God that I'm as good as dead
Then thank your God that I'm not aware
And thank God that I just don't care
And I guess I just don't know
And I guess I just don't know

Velvet Underground - Heroin
And above all, is punk

Sorry for non italian or spanish speakers, because they miss the greatness of Franco Battiato. 'La cura' is my all time favourite love poem.

Also great, as it has been said before in this forum, is David Cousins from Strawbs:

'Here in the windchill years of our lives
We dwell in the shade of evergreen
Stirring the last of the slow burning embers
Counting our way through a year of Decembers'

(Evergreen)

Not to mention the great Ian Anderson:

'Your sperm's in the gutter, your love in the sink'

Boston doesn't usually come to mind when the topic is lyric genius, but one line has stayed with me:

I understand about indecision
But I don't care if I get behind
People livin' in competition
All I want is to have my peace of mind.

And then there's my all-time favorite pair of lyrics from the Dead...

You who choose to lead must follow
But if you fall you fall alone
If you should stand then who's to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home. - Ripple

and

Such a long long time to be gone
and a short time to be there. - Box of Rain

and finally, from Talk Talk:

Create upon my flesh
Create approach upon my breath
Bring me salvation if I fear
Take my freedom
A sacred love

Create upon my breath
Create reflection on my flesh
The wealth of love
Bear me a witness to the years
Take my freedom
Let my freedom up
Take my freedom for giving me a sacred love

Create upon my flesh
Create a home within my head
Take my freedom
Let my freedom up
Take my freedom for giving me a sacred love. - Wealth

^ Spot on James with the Talk Talk lyric. I'd forgotten what a great wordsmith our Mr Hollis is.
I must remind the right honourable gentleman that a monologue is not a decision.
