I've always thought 1967 was the best, most experimental year for the Beatles. And here may lie the proof:
http://www.nme.com/news/the-beatles/41094 Paul McCartney has confirmed that the mythical Beatles song 'Carnival Of Light' exists, and has suggested it may see release. The experimental 14-minute song was recorded in 1967 for an electronic music festival but was never released. What do you expect from this? I say, proto-prog at its best. Can't wait to hear it. |

From what I heard only Harrison (George that is) vetoed it when considering it for inclusion on Anthology. Hopefully his wife has a different opinion.
And I'm not sure Macca is in possession of the long, 14 minute version, only a shorter (4 minute) version.
I seem to recall that it was recorded the same day as Penny Lane in early '67.
