I already participated in the challenge of naming the 50 best songs as well as the 50 best albums according to personal taste. I thought it was time for the ultimate challenge: name your 50 most favourite bands in right order.
It seems (too) hard but I had it done within 15 minutes and to make it a little easier: you're allowed to name non-prog bands. So take up the glove I'd say. Good luck.

By the way: these are my 50 (number 50 is still a great band as you can see):

Appears I've been too hasty with my 15 minutes. I left out some significant bands with my 50. To prevent doing it all over again I will name the forgotten bands with the appr. range
The Tangent: no. 14
Glass Hammer: no. 21
Nexus: no.17
Ice Age: no.19
Vandenplas no.24
Royal Hunt no.32
And also honorable mentions for Guns & Roses, Explorers Club, Mangrove, Masterplan and Grand Stand who just fell out of the first 50. By the way I left out a few bands that had made only one album so far like Skeem, Frost, Apple Pie and Amaran's Plight. So you see, mentioning 50 great bands isn't really that hard (mentioning them all and putting them in the right order is, though Pinch )

It's hard to choose: right now, last 5 years, all time?

I deferred to my library on last.fm a little bit. And I'm sure I'm missing some.

This is according to Last.FM.  I can't say it's completely accurate but it's as close as I'm going to get with one glaring ommission I can think of: High Tide.  I love them but have so little material I can find to listen to they haven't made a splash yet, they'd most likely be in the top 20.

Time always wins.

I love the classics: Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, ELP, Rush, Gentle Giant, Van der Graaf Generator, Frank Zappa, etc.
And the semi-prog to non-prog classics: Jimi Hendrix, Cream, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Who, Spirit, The Kinks, Jefferson Airplane, Queen, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Blue Oyster Cult, David Bowie, etc.
And the other fairly famous classic prog bands: Uriah Heep, Gong, Soft Machine, Return to Forever, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Hawkwind, Kansas, Focus, Caravan, ELO, Dixie Dregs, Camel, Atomic Rooster, The Moody Blues etc.
And the classic modern prog bands like: Liquid Tension Experiment, Porcupine Tree, The Flower Kings, Transatlantic, etc.
And the semi-prog modern bands like: The Gathering, The Decemberists, The Mars Volta, Phish, Tool, Pelican, etc.

So, after all that, I will list my top favorites that not everbody has heard of:

Kevin Gilbert (just amazing)
Crack the Sky (more rock than prog)
OSI (electronicy metal)
Raw Material (jazzy heavy prog)
Umphrey's Mcgee (jam band)
Oysterhead (Primus + Phish + X / 3)
Man Man (just weird)
Niacin (light fusion)
UFO (listen to "Flying" and tell me they're not prog)
The Paul Winter Consort (world fusion)
Ween (love 'em or hate 'em)
Idiot Flesh (hmmm...)
Esperanto (odd singer, great music)
Gravy Train (some early 70's prog)
John Zorn (free-jazz/jewish/something else)
Invisible (Argentinian prog)

It's funny, for a long time now I am planning to suggest them for prog related. This album is from their spacey years but I also love their hardrock years in which they were pretty progressive for a rock band ( Michael Schenker was brilliant of course). Their live album Strangers in the Night was legendary !
Who knows I will suggest them shortly.

By the way do you also know Ufo 1 and Live and Japan ? I have the vinyls (re-issues 1982). UFO 1 is from 1969 so in fact they are proto-prog. Actually it was more space rock than psychedelic/space prog but ok.
A day without prog is a wasted day
