Topic: Your Favourite Keyboard Instrument Posted: August 11 2008 at 04:45 |
The keyboard is one of the most important instruments in progressive rock, in fact in many instances it is the dominating instrument. A blend of all the keyboard instruments may be the best option, however, which is your favourite?
My choice is the church organ, as long as it is used sparingly. The sheer power of the church organ can add so much to a track, as long as it is not overused. I would cite Wakeman as the finest exponent, along with Emerson, and lately, Tomas Bodin of TFK.
What does everybody else think?

I'd say the hammond organ or the syths. The synths make great lead and bad rythym, and the hammond organ makes great rythm and okay lead. Overall, I chose the hammond ogan for being an all-around better package than the synths, but I still prefer the synth's lead over the hammond's lead.

Sorry folks. I left out mellotron . How could I?
I don't think I can add an extra option to the poll. I love the mellotron. Sorry again.

I love the sound of a synthesizer but in the hands of a master there is nothing better than the sound of a Hammond B3.

I'm going to vote for " Piano", because I love the sound of a clean piano with distorted electric guitars.
Examples I can think of would be Savatage and X Japan.
I'm definately not commenting on the skill of the musicians, maybe I'm just a fan of the way a few key albums were recored.
To me, the sound of a true Grand Piano in a rock band is like mixing something modern with something traditional.

It was a hard decision between the synth and the rhodes. A Synthethiser is great because you can play it even if you don't really play piano. But the Rhodes piano is the coolest "prog" instrument ever. Probably because it feels different everytime. Or everytime it's on a different kind of prog subgenre it sounds different.
Plus, the Synth's got more votes than the Rhodes. SO I'll go with the Fender Rhodes.

YOU, SIR, KNOW YOUR STUFF! VCS 3 is such a crafty device, had one once long ago, and what more can be said from the 'tron! Any 7 second burst from this irrational and prissy contraption beats any note combination from any keyboard!

Piano. Love that instrument.
Quite fond of the Hohner Clavinet thing VDGG uses.

Synth just because a good one can do a decent mimic of the others (I know this will probably be controversial) and so much more. I've got an old Kawai K1.

It's got to be the piano. Everything else just sits on top of that basic design.

I would answer the Mellotron. The one that adds more to progressive rock is the moog, so synthesizers.
