Topic: Progressive Technology Posted: July 20 2008 at 13:25 |
Progressive Music has been poured into our brains via many different forms of technology and senses.
As we all know music started off with the vinyl, slowly moved to different types of tapes, then the majestic CD, now the infamous "Digital" music era (With lots of pirating along the way!). Also somewhere in the midst of all that technology change, a new sense started helping us enjoy music; Video (Thriller anyone?). Not much has changed since the way of Music Videos, in the way as how music can be input through different senses.
What do you think will be next?
Personally (this sounds far fetched, but back in the day, I'm sure digital music and Music Videos sounded far fetched), I feel that with all the research going on now with the brain, we will be able to insert small chips into our brain, that are directly connected to the part which we enjoy music and sound with, while also being connected to our nervous center. So what would this do? It would be like music is playing inside your head, giving a phenomenal LSD like feeling, while at the same time, the changes in moods of the music, could change what you are actually feeling in your body.
That would be awesome...

Yeah, some similar thoughts have occured to me, I think one of the next phases of discovery will be 'hooking' the brain up directly to technology, computers etc. As with any advancement there will be good and bad consequences.
I don't condone the use of psychedelic drugs because they are very dangerous substances, but I think that people who got to try the really pure LSD had a somewhat indecipherable glimpse of some possible futures in some form or another.

lol what?
I'm sorry, but I choose not to believe that people on pure LSD can see into the future. How can you see 'the future' if your brain doesn't even have a rational grasp of the present reality?
And I would NEVER trust any ANY company or corporation to have the ability to surgically implant entertainment technology into the brain that God's nature has developed on its own. Hell no. Really, seriously, how far are you willing to let technology and corporations go for entertainment? At that point, they would literately OWN PART OF YOUR MIND.
I know science fiction is fun to talk about, and I know I sound pretty paranoid, but... no... just no.

You would get wonderful little subliminal messages like "buy Coca-Cola!" .....
Think: all of the erosion that TV has caused in the past 80 years or so, influencing the minds of millions of consumers for the purpose of profit. It's bad enough already that they're in everybody's house, it would be devastating if entertainment technology became part of the human body.
If I ever see this come up in my lifetime, I would gladly call the users 'morons', 'tools', 'consumer whores', etc. straight to their face.

Absolutely, and it will become widely popular. Perhaps not the implantations, but the electroted attached to your brain, probably with a combination of real audio (a mixage of two or more inputs to the brain for more advanced expereince) and, let's say, a 3D video (VR).
That's just a step forward. Another step forward will also be:
The level our musical instruments/studio equipment/computers are on right now it's nowhere near perfect. I can imagine an audio software, doing instant analysis of an audio sample that will break it down into layers of bass, drums, gutars, vocals, even background noise, automatically transcribing sheet music and writing text of lyrics sung.
Okay, that's worthy and useful. However, slightly off topic, there's another thing that I'm afraid of:
Programming languages will develope to the stage we would not need to use Visual Basic, just talk to the computer in our native language giving instrucions.
Now imagine instructions like:
"compose me an uptempo progressive symph rock song, with lush keyboards and female vocals. Use Tarkus.wav as an example of dynamics and any file from Renaissance folder as a reference for a vocal timbre."
Keep in mind that self-composing software already exists, although it's quite primitive at this stage.
Or even worse: a scanner scan your brain waves, your thoughts, likings and preferences, computer analyses it - and composes an ultimate song for you, that you will love to death because you simply can not resist the addiction of something that fits your personality so strongly. All your belowed ELP, Genesis and Dream Theater tunes down the drain. I guess, after a fast boom of "personalized hits" there will be an overload of human society, causing a new musical movement called "intentionally unpleasing music". However, if we reach that stage, I guess those device will be used as a political and economica weapons of manipulations, a worst possible Orwellian scenario.

He means, that the technology that may come in the future, will have similar effects of LSD :P
What are other opinions of what the next progression in technology will be?
<"However, if we reach that stage, I guess those device will be used as a

And we probably wouldn't even notice that we were mind warped, as most people don't in Hollywood films :P I'm sure the government has no desire to do that, despite that most people think the whole world is a giant conspiracy.

Technology will advance in ways unimagineable and humans will embrace those advancements. I can remember when a transistor was as big as a rubber on the end of a pencil- now they fit 3 million into waffers as big as your thumb nail. The type of enhancements you are talking of will not happen with transistor technology, but who knows what is around the corner- for the betterment or detrement of we of mortal flesh.

No, that's what you said..... twice: in your original post and just now again. And I have no objection towards that at all. But I do object to what Easy Money said, which is:

And I disagree. Lets remove the mysticism from the drug: People who take LSD do see and experience things, but not necessarily the future. And I think anybody with an imagination can have 'a somewhat indecipherable glimpse of
some possible futures in some form or another.'

You do realize that if someone invents something like that it won't stay legal for very long? I'm thinking what would be more interesting than technology to put stuff in my head would be something to take stuff out like record my dreams.

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...
