I just heard Who's Next for the first time. Is it just me, am I crazy or there's is an influence in Marillion's music from The Who? Seriously, I hear a lot of Marillion when i hear that album (not all songs of course). Maybe Daltrey's voice, maybe the atmosphere... I don't know. Anybody else notices this?

interestingly enough i was listening to "Who's Next" yesterday but i don't see what you state... and the similar 'atmosphere' sounds kind of vague to me...

Incommunicado could have been a Who song I think. Just like Basba O reilly could have been a Marillion song (with a stretch of the imagination).

Hogarth or Fish era Marillion..?
I cant really hear it myself to be honest. Who's Next is a brilliant album, with a few proggy credentials. I sometimes think when Townsend sings it's quite Gabriel like, but I never made a Marillion connection.

Having some problems identifying the link. But then I'm a rabid The Who fan and very new to Marillion, so my judgement certainly is a little blurred. But wait...I can accept it...at least partially. Something with the atmosphere on the less rockin' tunes (of The Who, that is). It sure isn't obvious though. But I won't declare you a madman for hearing something  .

I really don't know much Marillion except for Script that I really don't like but musically is quite impressive..
So which album of Marillion you hear these influences?
I love The Who that's why I wanna know..

If anything it'd be fish, and who knows really, bands can have tiny bits of influences from bands, But if Marillion has it it's very subtle at most.
As everyone has asked... Which specific Marillion are you referring to?

That could be, since Peter Gabriel never did the shouting that Fish did, though Phil collins sometimes did. Songs such as incommunicado (Though it does sound kind of similar to pt 2 of genesis' domino) could take some influence from the 70s Who
