Alas, my trusty Yamaha 'Natural Sound Stereo Receiver' is dead. I hit the power button and all I get is a nice little THUNK. No lights, no nothing. It is toast.

That means I'm reduced to listening to music on my ipod until I find a replacement. Anyone have any recommendations for a good receiver and/or amplifier?

Before you get someone in here like Oliverstoned (does he still post here?) telling you that the only way to listen to music is through a $10,000 tube receiver/amplifier, I'm here to tell you that pretty much anything will get the job done as long as the connections are solid.

My advice would be to go to Best Buy or whatever and get a basic stereo receiver. I have a pretty stripped-down Sony that I got for about $100, it has A and B speaker channels, and plenty of power. As long as it's sending the sound to decent speakers (I have some basic Yamaha bookshelf speakers and a sub-woofer on the B channel), it will sound as good as what you put into it.

Yep, I'm not looking to drop much more than $500 on a new one. I think that's what I paid for the Yamaha 15 years ago. In checking some out online I notice few seem to have phono inputs for turntables. All I need is CD/Phono inputs. May be a problem but I'll have to go spend some time checking it out.

Try ebay for refurbished Marantz receivers. If it is made in the U.S. you will get a quality receiver. I won 2 of them for under the price that you want to spend. The sound is fantastic!

I owned a Marantz amp back in the mid-70's for which I paid what was at the time a small fortune for me (I was a broke college student), and the right channel constantly kept going out, like a couple times per year. The thing was in the repair shop 3-4 times for the same problem, until the warranty ran out at which point the right channel went out yet again and I threw it away. Haven't been a big fan of Marantz since for obvious reasons.

<rant on> You know you're getting old when you can't actually buy a decent two channel stereo amp/receiver in a store anymore, unless you want to pony up $3K for a McIntosh. I live in a fairly huge metro area and all anyone sells at the lower- to mid- price range is 5.1 and 7.1, for which I have no use. <rant off>

Got another Yamaha 2.1 receiver. Actually an upgrade from the dead one.

brainstorm a minute....

does your reciever have a fuse in back? look at that. is is black? replace it.
take the shroud off. does any component look like it has a "bubble" or burnt spot?
do any capacitors look like something is leaking out of them? (dont touch caps! if you do, first take a rubber handle screwdriver, touch it to the + side, and touch the metal end of screwdriver to the metal chasis, and ZAP it first! this is a life saver!).
how does the solder look? most likely it is a pc board though.

if you do not want to spend a lot, check thrift and pawn shops. try it out first. you may have something you will be happy with.

Yep, now that I have a replacement for the sucker, I should poke around the old one and see if there's anything saving. It has no outer fuse; not to say there isn't one on the 'motherboard'. I learned way back in the old days, when working on one of my Leslies, that it was not a great idea to have a screwdriver come into contact with a capacitor

, which knowledge I suppose has ever served me well!
