Topic: Porcupine Tree new acoustic CD("We lost.skyline") Posted: January 29 2008 at 03:54 |
From the band's website:
"On the 4th October 2007 Porcupine Tree arrived for an in-store performance and signing session at Park Avenue CDs in Orlando, Florida, with 200 fans also in attendance. Although it was originally planned that the full band would play, lack of space dictated that it was only the 2 guitarists / singers Steven Wilson and John Wesley who delivered an impromptu performance, including many songs rarely (if ever) played by the band, making for a very special and intimate show. Fortunately this one-off performance was captured by a remote recording facility and the complete 8 song, 33 minute show is now being released in a digipack sleeve created by photographer Lasse Hoile and designer Carl Glover."

Talk about scraping the barrel. This really is pushing it in terms of fan loyalty as far as I'm concerned. I went to the instore performance in London for the launch of Fear and its was amusing but hardly worth recording for posterity. Unless this impromptu set has seen Steven and John suddenly ascend to Let it Be rooftop quality then - I'll pass. And that's just the £6 CD version. how about €20 for black vinyl or €24 for marbled vinyl!!! Cheeky monkeys.

I suspect it really is for the diehard fans like myself, particularly the vinyl, but in my opinion it'll be interesting to hear completely acoustic versions of familiar songs.

I ordered it too... ![Embarrassed](smileys/smiley9.gif) I heard the sample on the Residents of a Blank Planet site, and I just really liked the mood of it all, and I've been looking for a good acoustic album. I just decided "Why not?" right then, and got it. I'm another hopeless fanboy ![Unhappy](smileys/smiley6.gif) but I love the music ![Big%20smile](smileys/smiley4.gif) While on the topic of Steve Wilson, is anyone else going to order the new Bass Communion album, Pacific Codex? I've loved BC's previous work and plan on getting this one too.

Yeah the Residents demo is excellent, I'm really looking forward to the rest of the album. I intend to get Pacific Codex and the Continuum 1 reissue due later this year, and then there's Steven Wilson's planned solo album and Cover Version V, I suspect that a lot of my money will be going in the direction of Steven Wilson this year.

Well, having had the album for a couple of days now, I would say that you were right on the money with this post - WLTS really is a very enjoyable listen from beginning to end.
There are songs here that I got a whole new level of appreciation for when hearing these stripped down arrangements of them, songs like Stars Die and Drown With Me for example. And any fan of the Nil Recurring gem called Normal should hear the performance on this album! It's very short, just a snippet really, but oh, is it ever so lovely! SW's banter just before the song is also worth more than one listen, hahah!
I'm very pleased to have gotten WLTS, but yeah, it is more of a fan release, I suppose.

Yep, it's a diehard fan release. There are some interesting takes, especially "The Sky Moves Sideways," "Waiting" and "Drown with Me" but often it seems like some really excellent moments are missed out on as with the lush arrangements. It's definitely good to listen to, but if I had to pay more than the $9.50 I did for it, I'd be a bit peeved. The songs seem to be over all too soon.
Sound Quality: 4/5 (excellent for a live show) Song Selection: 3/5 Enjoyability" 4/5 PA rating: 2/5

I've been looking into getting this. Now the question I have for everyone is should I get this or Nil Recurring?
Which is better and why?
Thank you in advance!

Most definitely Nil Recurring - fantastic EP. We Lost The Skyline is a fans only live CD (IMO anyways).

Well I am a fan! ![LOL](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif)
Nil Recurring is now being sold in stores, I just saw it in best buy so I'll probably get that first but N Ellingworth has a good point in getting them both (which I eventually will ![Big%20smile](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif) )

Being serious for a change I'd say that Nil Recurring is the one to get first, then go for We Lost The Skyline.
