As a Finn I'm very interested in knowing if you recognize any of these Finnish prog 'giants'.
Which is your favourite Finnish prog band? I guess most of you have at least heard of Wigwam!
Some of these can be considered as jazz/fusion as well, but nevermind.
I'll probably vote for Kingston Wall. They rock!

I'm on a vacation in Helsinki, and just bought Tasavallan Presidentti's second album, and am now listening to Kingston Wall at my friend's house. I'll try to acquire Alamaailman Vasarat, Finnforest, Tabula Rasa and Haikara albums later this week.

The only one I really know among these is Wigwam, which is pretty awesome, but I'm waiting until the end of the week until I cast my vote.

You forgot one great finnish band, Höyry-Kone. But my vote goes for Wigwam (What a surprise) though I think Kingston Wall, Haikara, Tasavallan Presidentti and Alamaailman Vasarat are also great.

By the way, sad news for the fans of Haikara. Their singer, composer, guitar player Vesa Lattunen died a couple of weeks ago at the age of 55.

Oh dear Lord, Nightwish got a vote! I consciously left them out of this poll. My only concern now is whether the person who voted for Nightwish has even heard any real Finnish prog bands, because they're all so much better!

Nightwish get my vote too! They are not that well known in my part of the world - but they do have a following. I have seen them compared to that other band (Evernescence). Tarja is by far the best female vocalist in prog metal. I would love to see them live...

What recommendations for a similar Finnish band?

It depends on what kind of prog you like. Wigwam, Tasavallan Presidentti, Haikara, Alamaailman Vasarat are "fusion" bands. If you're into jazzy prog you might wanna try Wigwam's "Fairyport" or "Being", Haikara's first album (might be a tough one to find though), or Tasavallan Presidentti's "Lambertland". If you're a Frank Zappa fan you should try Pekka Pohjola, Hidria Spacefolk is quite similar to Ozric Tentacles, Kingston Wall is basically a mix between Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin..And so on. I think they all worth getting .

My vote went for Haikara. Sad News for Lattunen.

Yes Hoyry Kone is missing and so is Uzva.

Wigwam and Tasallavan Presidentii are the earliest and more meaningful Finish band.

Oh yeah, Uzva is also missing. Sean, you were wondering in your Uzva - Niittoaika review what was the connection between Uzva and Hoyry-Kone. Hoyry-Kone's Marko Manninen played cello on Uzva's first album "Tammikuinen Tammela". I believe that's the connection.

Yes, Tarja is a great singer.(I prefer Heather Findlay from Mostly Autumn though ) That's one positive thing I can say about Nightwish.
There is a whole bunch of that kind of metal bands in Finland, such as Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica. Try them if you're into that kind of stuff, although both have a male vocalist. (Not that you can always tell that )

Alamaailman Vasarat gets my vote - Whenever I listen to them I always end up grinning from ear to ear.

Admittedly I've only heard Fairyport, but I can't quite see all the fuss about Wigwam on the strength of it. To me they seem to play somewhat Colosseum-esque bluesy jams and sub-standard Zappa ripoffs... Am I missing something?

 Alamaailman : Their second album has got tremendous moments where they sound like acoustic death-prog-metal.

Actually , both Fairyport and Being are quite nice but somewhat over-rated (there are some Zappa influences no rip-offs) but Nuclear Nightclub is vastly over-rated.

Alamaailman's 2nd is definitely their best.

Oh, and from what I've heard of Haikara they're pretty special too, but I'm not familiar enough with their music to really pass judgement.

Haikara's two first albums are definitely worth getting. The only problem is that they are relatively rare. Even I had difficulties finding those two albums and I live in Finland.
