Gentle Giant

Dig me...But don't...Bury me
I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive

Script gets my vote given these options. Lucifer`s Friend`s first album is probably my favourite debut.

A toss between Gentle Giant and Hybris for me. I remember I'd avoided the former for some time because I'd heard that it was weak in comparison to their other releases, but even on their debut Gentle Giant were still proggier than the average prog band!

And as for Hybris... there can be no doubting the strength of that album! It's a mind-blower and no mistake!

I think it's KC ITCOTCK, but Pink Floyd's "Piper" is a close second, imo.

Riverside-Out Of Myself. A devastatingly good debut that is as good as most of the above.

Though not in the same class as "Script" it is better than either the debut Yes or Genesis offerings although in no sense pioneering.I have big hopes for this lot..Big smile

Script for A Jester's tear. It had a mature sound, and as an immediate classic, same goes for ITCOTCK, where most debut albums are not the best work from the given artist those two are.

Marillion because it's the the one that sounds least (of the ones I've heard) like they're "finding their feet" apart from ELP, and for some reason I haven't been in much of an ELP mood these past few days..! . However from a historical point of view, KC, GG, VdGG, PF (what a lot of acronyms), Yes and Genesis have all gone on to create albums which build on their debuts and create which I find truly stunning (while I love Marillion, apart from the first few times I've heard them they never "blow me away" in quite the same way as the aforementioned) . If I had the choice of any (prog) debut, it'd probably be the Soft Machine's though.

I'm gonna go for Sock's Bread.

Besides the fact that the misspelling made me laugh (I'm a simpleton, I know), I think "The Light" is an amazing debut album, sounding like a fully-realized band at their peak. I don't think SB ever did any better.

KC's debut is classic, but since it's not among my favorite KC albums I can't honestly vote for it. But it was outstandingly original, and arguably started prog.

ELP's debut is still my favorite album by the band, but again- it's not without flaws, and doesn't really represent the 'sound' of ELP as well as other released. The same goes for Freak Out and Piper: great albums and impressive debuts but not really what the respective bands were all about, or came to be about.

Soft Machine Volume 1 should've been added.

Soon as Dream Theater's "When Dream And Day Unite" isn't there, I went with Yes' "Yes".
