What on Earth is this?? was he high when he recorded this? what's with the whimsical irritating vocals like the growls, the electronic "h-h-happy?" and so on? This is some of the least pleasing listening experiences in months. Some parts sound decent, but nothing really stood out apart from a complex acoustic guitar theme.

anyone has found it terrible at first and then grown to like/love it?

I liked it from the first listen, although I do prefer his 70's stuff to it. On the other hand, I haven't listened to it in a long time now, might give it a spin again soon.

I'm a long time Oldfield fan and bought it /heard it for the first time about three years ago.  Kind of neutral on it at the moment.  I like it better than some others in his discography but certainly not as much as others.

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I bought it in march, and have only listened to it in it's eternity once.
When the "H-h-h-h-h-h-appy?" thing started, i thought "What is this crap?". But then it disappeared, and got a bit better.
I didn't like it very much, still.

One of the most sonically impressive albums I've ever heard. I love it and gave it 5 stars when I reviewed it.

When I first heard it about 4 years ago I thought it sounded like a collection of beginnings but after several listenings it began to grow on me. I liked the idea of Maggie Thatcher dancing in hobnails. Could have done without the loud clashes during the first five minutes but apparently there is a reason. Any morse code experts out there?

It's too long to pick apart! I'll need to listen to it at least a few more times before I'll be able to remember any of it. I've only heard it twice, but some parts stood out as really good.

Single best work in prog music, and all music in general.
 
And suprisingly, I really DID NOT like it on first listen...I had no idea what was going on.
 
Dug a little bit deeper, gave it another shot and BAM!  It hit me like a ton of bricks.  Completely ingenius.  Pure brilliance, best peice of music ever written.Clap

I think it's one of the best discs in his discog (though I haven't heard all that much). Really different from what I expected, and that certainly made it better in my mind.

agreed, if you don't like this album you've either not listened to it enough, or you are a cloth eared-nincompoop.
