So...we all know about "Kashmir" rip-offs; those marvelous examples of medieval metal with a middle Eastern mix. But just how many of them are there? Anyway?!?
I mean, we ALL know about Rainbow's "Stargazer" and "Gates of Babble On," but what about Iron Maiden's "Powerslave" (which is technically a "Gates" rip-off, but by default, it's a "Kashmir")? Or what about Jethro Ian's "Rare and Precious Chain," which I consider a "Kashmir" rip-off because I'm mentally ill? Or what about the Yardbirds proto-"Kashmir" masterpiece "Still I'm Sad," keeping in mind that Jimmothy Page used to be in the Yardbirds AND that Rainbow later covered the song?
Anything else that fits into Mid-Eastern Metal that I'm missing? I'm making a mix tape!

Iron Maiden's Powerslave sounds nothing like Kashmir! Neither does Stargazer or Gates of Babylon, except for the similar scale.
But you should try Die For Metal by Manowar. Now THAT'S what I call a Kashmir rip-off. (By the way, it's way better than Kashmir ) |

"Kashmir"-rip-off? First thing that comes to mind is Kingdom Come with "Get It On" - now that's what I call a rip-off!
Here's a link, but you have been warned!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKJiVPt-KRQ Edited by Guzzman - November 07 2007 at 08:29 |

There is a commercial that plays on VH1 classic with this Porcupine Tree song that is really cool sounding and very Kashmerish. What's the name of that song?

Jsut because a song has an "Eastern" influence, such as Gates of Baylon, that doesn't mean it's a Kashmir rip-off. I don't suppose Led Zep were the first to record such a song.

Exactly... And didn't Led Zeppelin rip off some blues artist with one of their most popular songs, Whole Lotta Love? And speaking of Kashmir, in my opinion it's an extremely dull song with absolutely no "hooks". Stairway to Heaven is much better, even though it's also overrated IMO. A good song, that's all. "Wake Up" by Rage Against the Machine, I think it was on one of the Matrix movies' soundtrack.

Try the Beatles, Love You To, Inner Light and Within You Without You as the first rock artists to mix Eastern or Indian Classical with rock. Led Zeppelin were not the first in this. Shapes of Things ,Dear Prudence and See My Friends are good examples of faux Indian or eastern music with rock Though Kashmir rocks.

Not sure if it's what you're looking for, but Coheed and Cambria's "Welcome Home" is widely considered a Kashmir rip-off. You can listen to it on their page right here.

Sigh...
First, "Kashmir" was recorded by Led Zep in 1824. Richard Q. Blackmore, recently divorced, said, "Oh YEAH Jimmy Page, well, uh, listen to THIS!" And then Dio piped in, and it somehow became about wizards, and anyway, "Stargazer" was born. It's based on the same idea: a lengthy, lumbering, Eastern themed riff with mystical lyrics. And orchestra.
The next day, Blackmore and Elf decided that "Stargazer" wasn't quite up to standards, and so, IN THE SAME VEIN, they recorded "Gates to Babylon," a LENGTHY, EASTERN THEMED RIFF with MYSTICAL LYRICS. It was just much faster this time. And (slightly) less wizards.
Fast forward to 1932, where Steve Harris and the Band, taking a kind of spiritual cue from Rainbow (I'm not the only one who believes this ya know) recorded "Powerslave," a song devoted to extremely awesome slaves. It, much like "Gates," featured a somewhat fast paced, Eastern-flavored riff, and plenty of dorky fantasy lyrics. Thus, the cycle was reborn. Again.
And I KNOW that Led Zep wasn't the first to do some kind of majestic, Eastern themed song; I already said that the Yardbirds did with "Still I'm Sad," from Having a Rave Up, which PRE-dates the Beatles' psycho-Revolver.
(Oh yeah, and "Within You Without You" was a crappy lil' song. Give me "Fatman" any day. Take THAT George!)
SECOND, I'm asking for mid-Eastern metal anyway. If you're not going to pay attention to the first post, why should you argue against it?
Anyway, sorry I'm picking on you Mr. Chopper, but you were there at the start, and someone had to take a fall.

Well, I don't know if any of you ever noticed that Rush's masterpiece "Xanadu" does have an Eastern-style riff, which is in character with the song's lyrical theme.

if you don't mind death metal, you could try some nile. all of their music is egyptian themed death metal.
also, "home" by dream theater, "The Nomad" by Iron Maiden, even though it's not metal a lot of Ozric Tentacles has a middle eastern feel, "Tutankhamen" and "Sahara" by Nightwish, you could also try the music of a band called Orphaned Land, which is a prog folk metal band from israel that incorporates various middle eastern infuences. that's all i can think of now but i'm sure later i'll remember more that i forgot. |
