TEMPANO hailing from Venezuela is a band I discovered through PA 2 years back and have been grateful for it. I have 3 albums of theirs - Ĺtabal-Yémal, El Fin de la Infancia (Childhood's End) and The Agony & The Ecstasy - all three are recommended bringing an interesting mix of "old" prog with some jazz-rock touches, with a fresh modern sound. It is also interesting to follow their development from their 1979 release Ĺtabal-Yémal (which was re-released by Musea) to their recent releases - El Fin de la Infancia (Childhood's End) ,+ The Agony & The Ecstasy
Their PA bio:
TEMPANO has a very personal sound in which superb melodies, complex breaks and very well-written themes reinforce the originality. The music is symphonic with extended solos and instrumental sections. The arrangements are fully orchestrated with intricate band interplay. In this context, "Atabal-Yemal" is a real gem ! Instrumental for the most part (Sung in Spanish for the rest), this CD includes refined melodies evoking RETURN TO FOREVER or CAMEL, the unusual sounds and breaks of HAPPY THE MAN, complex writing ala KING CRIMSON and the creativity of TANTRA ; the whole is touched with a typically warm, South American color.
And what to say, about "The Agony And The Ecstasy" (2002), apart that this is the best of TEMPANO filled with maturity ?!? As warm as ever (Of course due to the Latin influences !) and purposefully more melodic than its predecessor, this album definitely shows a personal and truly high class music that benefits from a perfect interpretation. Their official website with updates is here:
What do you make of their music? Any particular favourite album or period?

I'll definitely check them out, Assaf - they're in Xover now, but from the above description I suspect they may be in the wrong place.

I like these kind of threads you have been creating lately Assaf, it is great to dedicate a thread to only one band, Tempano from Venezuela is probably the best band from that country, The Agony and The Ecstasy besides El Fin de la Infancia are amazing albums, i invite people listening to them.

A review frmo Expose from 1998 when their first album was re-issued by Musea:
Expose 12 - 1998.
Tempano - "Atabal Yemal"
By Peter Thelen
Tempano's debut from 1979 has long been among the sparkling gems of South-American progressive rock, and one that has undeservingly eluded reissue until now. Anyone who has vinyl of it knows exactly what I'm talking about.
This Venezuelan four-piece, play a sort of gentle symphonic progressive rock that owes much influence to many of the great Italian bands of the seventies. The echoes of PFM, Errata Corrige, Locanda Delle Fate, Celeste, and a number of others can be heard as the band work through the original six tunes that made up the original " Atabal Yemal" LP. There are some jazzy elements in the sound as well, which give the band a very unique character among other SA bands of the day. While there are three beautifully melodic vocal tracks - sung in Spanish, among the original six(vocal duties handled impressively by guitarists Pedro Castillo), it is safe to say that Tempano is primarily an instrumental band. Only "Anhelos" is dominated by the vocal theme, an a majestic one it is. But it's the opening instrumental on each - "Cascada" and "Atabal Yemal" and the closing track "Presencias y Ausencias" that shine the brightest of all, each navigating through numerous themes and developments. Here's the news, though: three bonus tracks are included - including two that break the ten minute mark, recorded by the reformed Tempano in 1998, featuring all four original members. All of these bonus tracks are at least as good, or possibly even better than the original six. Apparently these were three tunes that the band had played but never recorded, so they decided to finally commit them to release with the reissue. The band's approach in the late nineties is a little more aggressive in comparison to the early material, but still colourful, complex and highly spirited. This one is a definite must-have for all fans of symphonic progressive, and specifically the softer Italian sound. My highest recommendation. |

I've got the cd The Agony And The Ecstasy. And I think that Tempano is the best prog band from Latin America. Far more interesting that The Flower Kings or Glass Hammer which play too much retro prog music for me.

I wouldn't compare Tempano to those bands (I'd rather contrast their sound to those, which is what you actually did so we agree), but let's focus on Tempano and not other bands.
For those who'd like to investigate the band, I'd start with the album that PhideauxFan has mentioned.

Just in case, we didn't added the band or wrote the bio, it is here since 2003 before the Symphonic Team existed.
We only added the photo, listened to their music and moved them from Symphonic where they don't belong to Art Rock where they are now and belong.

Atabal-Yémal is essential prog. It's a shame Tempano released "disposable" pop releases during the eighties.

In these series of single artist threads, I am planning on devoting a thread for each of the two other bands you mentioned.
