Roxy Music don't get much of a mention here.  Their first two albums were heavily inspired by Eno and "Stranded" was an excellent album which lost nothing for his absence. "Country Life" had its moments.

They started turning into a "coffee table" band as time wore on but this shouldn't detract from the brilliance of those early albums.

Good thread on a sadly neglected band - however, for the time being RM are in Prog-Related, so this thread is in the wrong section. Personally, I think at least the first part of their career is prog - check the superb "Viva!" live album, which features both Eddie Jobson and John Wetton.

I like the first two albums very much! Good songs, very original, a lot of uninhibited energy Thumbs%20Up

I prefer their later albums. Avalon is their best effort; so sophisticated!  I do find Bryan Ferry's voice a bit wearing after a while which limits my appreciation of the band, so most of their albums are 3 star efforts with some variation within this grade.

They are the epitomy of the art rock genre. So what are they doing in "prog related"???

I used to like them more as a teenager; all era's, from their 'art rock(?)' beginnings through to their 'coffee table' croonings!

Ferry's voice gets quite annoying sometimes, but they wrote very strong tunes. Never had a number 1 single in the UK. I could have sworn blind that Avalon made it there, but apparently not.

Wasn't "Jealous Guy" number 1? (although obviously not a Roxy song).

Yeah, great band although they got a bit smooth for me later on in their career. I have "The Early Years" compilation which is brilliant from start to finish.

Edit - I've just checked my book of Hit singles - JG was a number one.

Ferry's vocal style did start out with a lot of rough edges but seems like with every new album it got a little bit smoother.

FYI according to Manzanera's web site Roxy has gone back to the studio recently to do a new album.  The news item is short on details and has been posted there for at least a few months (no date for the item).  The project may have stalled out as a newer news item says Phil is working on a new solo album.  If you haven't checked out any of Phil's solo stuff. His last three ones Vozero, 6PM and 50 minutes later are really good.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

...and Dance Away and Love is the Drug got to #2

They had three #1 albums though (Stranded, Avalon & Flesh & Blood) which isn't that surprising since for many of their progger fans they were more of an album band (For Your Pleasure has no singles on it and In Every Dream Home A Heartache is a mini prog epic).

The Total Recall video/DVD is in need of a re-issue because it is a superb document of their early years.
What?

Ironically, one of Manzanera's best solos was on 'Pyjamarama'. A single that was not included on a studio album.

Thumbs%20Up A great band. I've enjoyed them since the mid 70s.

I'd highly recommend their "Live at the Apollo" DVD to all true fans -- a terriffic show Clap (see my review).

Brilliant band. Up to Viva that is. The first two are my favorites and highly original. They don't get nearly enough praise here.
Fantastic songs like If There is Something, Virginia Plain, Do The Strand, Editions of You, In Every Dream Home a Heartache and The Bogus Man.

After the first two they became a bit more mainstream but there still are some beautiful songs.  Street Life, Psalm ( why not on Viva?) ,  A  Song for Europe ( why not on Viva? ), Mother of Pearl, Out of The Blue and many more.

I love Ferry's voice.
No one sounds like them.Pulp tried on a few songs but no.
The DVD live at the Apollo is indeed a trip back in time with STYLE.

I am a huge fan of the early Roxy Music, great adventurous and captivating blend of several styles with excellent musicians and a singer with a very distinctive voice. My favorite is the live album Viva!, in my opinion Roxy Music at their pinnacle featuring outstanding work on the electric violin by Eddie Jobson, especially the solo in Out Of The Blue. If you want to witness this, check out the DVD Roxy Music Musikladen 1974/75, I also recommend the compilation CD The Early Years Thumbs%20Up

Well... The Mandrakeroot's PA team (Mandrakeroot, Ely78 and Lady In Black) are very grateful that it someone is us that it loves the Roxy Music!

Proper while we returned from the sea we are listened to ourselves the tribute that I (or Ely78 I don't remember because PA didn't accept the format of cover and so... we experienced with the other account and other program...  Before to notice me that it was too large size!!!)  introduced in PA.  I should say that I prefer the true Roxy Music.  But also those of the trubure aren't badly!

Avalon is exquisite and one of the best discs to come out of the 80's.

I only got Stranded so far, but it's really a helluva album. The first side is practically flawless ("Just Like You" is gorgeous, but "Psalm" is my fave), and the second side ain't no slouch neither (the opening of "Mother of Pearl" proves they can rock, and the sax on "Song For Europe" is fantastic).

Though I like quite a bit of Roxy Music now and then I wouldn't go as far as calling them art rock. Maybe artsy, but that's it. Sometimes I wonder where they would have gotten to if Brian Eno had stayed in the band.

Stranded is excellent, but be sure to try the first two though.
