Topic: Why do people refuse.... Posted: August 28 2007 at 12:06 |
....to take Dream Theater seriously? I apoligize if I am beating a dead horse here, but I'm rather new to the fourm and was disappointed to see all the DT bashing. Their one of the cleanest, tightest bands I've heard in my life, and the live show's even better. Every member is a spectacular virtuoso, and the band is so great together. What makes most folk here not like?

I like Dream Theater, and that's probably why you haven't heard me talk about them. It's easier to find complaints about bands here then appreciative threads. Even beyond that most people find Labrie obnoxious, and their writing soulless. Regardless of those things I still enjoy various Dream Theater cd's myself, but many people can't overlook those qualities. Also don't forget everyone here is acquainted with Dream Theater, so when they do something stupid you hear about it 100,000 times.

The Prog Archives encompass the whole wide world of progressive rock music, rather than just the progressive metal area. There are a lot of folks on this website who love progressive rock music, but don't love progressive metal music and thus don't like DT. Unfortunately, there are some of this group of non-progressive metal music lovers who feel that it is their responsibility to bash DT everytime a thread comes up. There is also the group of Porcupine Tree fans who feel that since Steve Wilson has said that he doesn't like DT that they need to fight the good battle for him. I have noticed a bit of a DT vs. PT battle throughout various threads. Personally, I like both bands so there is no need to bash either of them.

Most of the fans are kind of ridiculous too.

Personally, I take DT very seriously - I just don't like them, and heaven knows I've tried. I'm even planning to go and see them live in late October, hoping to change my opinion of them. As to the bashing, this is something I prefer to avoid, though I've been guilty in the past of making fun of them.

And I quote, "Their one of the cleanest, tightest bands I've heard in my life, and
the live show's even better. Every member is a spectacular virtuoso..."
This make them sound very geometric, and devoid of anything organic.
Although, I do like the band,(I'm just not crazy about them) that's the main thing about them that bothers me.

I think its about time we ban starting DT threads again for awhile. It was so peaceful back then. The admins just closed a thread exactly like this on Aug 20.

The first time a heard DT (Scenes), I put it down and didn't listen to
it again for half a year. Now I think it's quite a good
album. In that sense, to appreciate DT's best work could take
some time; however, they do have a lot of throwaway songs (in my
opinion, of course!).
One of the great things about DT is also part of the problem: they have
stated many times that their mission is do metal, prog, and viruosic
playing. If you don't like one of those (in my case, I can only
take so much full-on metal), it may spoil your whole impression of the
band.
I pick out what I like, enjoy and respect it, and leave the rest to rot on my shelf.

IDK why exactly don't like them. I find no connection in the music, and I can't say it's because their soulless or because it's too Precise and mechanical, because I love Liquid Tension Experiment. I think some of it comes down to the vocals, which that whole style of Vocal I don't like. But I guess just nothing about them connects.

I used to like them... But they have failed to renew themselves and I have lost my interest in their music. (Why do they produce albums over 78 min. every time? Less can be more sometimes)

There's more than enough identical threads to this one already. let's not open old wounds again.
By the way, as a tip, it's easier to find such old threads if they contain the band name in the thread title.
