Indeed.
Wonder who's going to be the first to post such a magnificent album (even though it ain't prog) - but I'm now just going to sit back, and have lunch!

That album is one of my favorite Who albums (just behind Quadrophenia though).

Possibly my favourite Who album. Virtually neck and neck with Quadrophenia for me. I love every track. Great performances, great production, and classic songs.

I think the best songs on Quadrophenia are definitely on par with those on Who's Next.

I have heard "Love Reign o'er" me, and it's powerful. Not sure i like it more than "Pure and easy" (i know it's not really on who's next..) or "Baba o'reilly", but it's good enough! :)

I just bought this album on vinyl the other night! Definitely one of my favorite album covers... it took me a long time before I realized what was actually going on in the picture.

A stunning achievement for all of rock. One of the top five rock albums ever made.

Baba O'Reilly Bargain Behind Blue Eyes Won't Get Fooled Again.
What more is there to say? Their best album.

I'm not particularly fond of Who's Next. It has some great songs like Baba O'Reilly, Won't Get Fooled Again, and a few others, but overall it didn't match the gloriousness of Quadrophrenia, Sell Out, By Numbers and A Quick One.

Hmm, now isn't that two songs from CSI? No wonder people like it.

To be honest when I've first heard "Who's Next" I was... disappointed. That wasn't long ago, about 3-4 months. My favourite bands always were: Queen, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath as for hard rock and also some prog bands like Rush, ELP, Yes, Pink Floyd and recently Dream Theater, so, you know, rather extreme technical stuff, adventureous, energetic and heavy. For a long time I avoided The Who, really don't know why, maybe because in my country (Poland) they weren't too popular. But finally I've decided to give them a try and bough "Who's Next". And when I heard them I first thought they were pretty lame. No killer riffs, no solos, no showing off, just pretty basic rock. Nothing more and nothing less. OK, some synthesisers here and there, but being used to extreme soloing by Rudess, and also being familiar with acts such as ELP or Yes, it wasn't something that would knock me of my feet. John Entwistle the best bass player? WHERE? I can't hear him! I've expected another LEAD type of bassist, someone similar to Chris Squire or Geddy Lee but nothing like that... Keith Moon the best drummer? So where are odd time signatures? Where are the drum solos? What is it that makes him better than Bill Bruford, Ian Paice or John Bonham? And Pete Townshend - pretty average guitarist. Nowhere near Jimmy Page or Ritchie Blackmore. I was confused. This is one of the greatest rock bands of all time? And this is the album concidered as the best of 1971 by many? So ahead of "Led Zeppelin IV", "Fireball", "The Yes Album", "Tarkus" and many others? How come? What is it about this album that makes it so unique? The lyrics? OK, they're good. Some funny, some serious, but still It doesn't convince me. So? How can this be such a masterpiece?
Finally, after several listens it hooked me! I really love this album now and play it even more often than all that stuff I've mentioned above. And I still can't understand why? I still sustain the arguments above. I still think that as a musicians they are overrated. But there's something about them that makes them really unique and enjoyable. Or maybe it's only because it sounds like nothing else that I've heard before? Beacuse The Who is the band that cannot really be compared to any of the bands I've mentioned. And my ears just need something fresh? Difficult to explain...

Oh... I thought this thread was about "who's next to be added to the prog-related and proto genre"!

I have rated several Who albums with five stars (total of five including one compil and a live one).
Still my preferred ones are Tommy and Quadrophenia (on par) followed by Who's Next (the deluxe double CD edition). The original Who's Next is definitely not as good but was the unique option in 1972 when I purchased it.
For Micky's information about the sleeve : NOTHING is going on there. WATER was split on the stones because NONE of the band members could pee...
Sorry Mick, but you have been fooled...
