I voted for Point of KNOW Return because I didn't see one single HAPPY THE MAN album listed in the poll. Why aren't HTM, HANDS and HOWEVER listed?

Out of these, Mahavishnu Orchestra. but Happy the Man overall, although I have heard very little of them.

Herbie Hancock doesn't really belong on this list.

I voted Hymn of the Seventh because its my fave on the list of those I know, but I could certainly be missing out on something.

  1. Kansas: Song for America, but Leftoverture and Point of Know Return are also good options.
  2. Santana: Caravanserai.
  3. Mahavishnu Orchestra: Birds of Fire is also a great choice, even when I prefer Apocalypse or Visions Of The Emerald Beyond because of the great Jean Luc Ponty who has a different and more symphonic style that Goodman.

Good list DB

I'd have picked Happy The Man myself if they had been included. Crafty
Hands is a fantastic album.

I love a lot of that stuff, even if it is mostly JAZZ.  You did miss a lot that's more obviously prog, e.g. Happy The Man or Cathedral (Stained Glass Stories is top class).

Uhh.. what makes Mahavishnu Orchestra American?  Isn't John McLaughlin from the UK?

And whats up with all the jazz bands.. and the Funkadelics???

And when did Journey and Jefferson Starship become prog???

What about Ambrosia, Gypsy, Babylon, Ethos,

I guess out of that group, I'll vote for Kansas.

Went with Kansas's Leftoverture, although I rate each of their first five albums quite highly ...
some question marks over JS' Dragonfly and Herbie Hancock's Headhunters ... although I think the album right before Headhunters ... Sextant is rather progressive ...

Happy The Man, Cathedral, Mithrandhir, Lift, Starcastle and Babylon are other interesting American prog bands from the classic era ... there's also Ambrosia and Crack the Sky (neither which I like very much) ... and Styx may not be prog, but Come Sail Away is certainly one of my fave American prog moments ...

Only 2 of the original Mahavishnu Orchestra were American, but as they were formed in the USA and (I believe) based there, they're generally considered an American band. Similarly, in the first line up of Weather Report  only Wayne Shorter was born in the USA. Over on this side of the pond, we still think of King Crimson as English, although for the last 25 years they have been at least 50% American.

That would have been my vote!

Not only the most accomplished band, but also HTM have been the most consistent - there is not a single low point in their career. Even their early bootlegs are top-notch muscial quality (if not recording).

And yes, Watkins is the best USA prog keyboardsman I've ever listened to.

Regards

What else is Journeys debut album but one of the
best prog albums ever from the US and Dragonfly
aint bad, about a proggy as the Jeffersons ever got. It
doesnt seem to be a problem for diversity amongst
English or Italian bands to classify them prog, why
are these guys any different. What would you call it?
Jazz fusion in America doesnt qualify as prog? All
jazz fusion in England is prog. The PROGARCHIVES
supports these artists.

Headhunters is not allowed due to a black artist
writing funky prog? Should Peter Hammill be ranting
in the foreground for it to qualify? As for Maggot Brain
Guru Guru wished they made that album.

I get lost with the modern definition. I forget ELO -
Eldorado is not prog because it was written by an
AOR artist!

Whoa, that was a tough list to choose from.

I finally decided on "What If" by the DIXIE DREGS, although I don't consider it my favorite american 70's album. I'm not sure what mine would be.

I was very much tempted to vote for SPIRIT's "Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus." . A fantastic album by a somewhat forgotten great band.

Peace & take care

Sounds more like every one else on here... with their "why isn't so and so listed in the archives"... Why is it when some of you guys like something... you just can't help but want to classify it prog.

Jazz is jazz... funk is funk... just because it may carry a few elements that relate here and there.. don't make it prog...
