Read today there was a shooting at Virginia Tech. 21 people dead, 22 including the gunmen.
Also, last year I believe, there was that guy who shot those little Amish girls at school.
Of course there are many other cases of things like this.
What the hell is wrong with these people??

Fox News says 32 killed (although, I don't know if they count the shooter or not).

Well, it's apparently news around the world now.

But if you haven't heard, apparently 31 people have been shot dead on the Virginia Tech campus this morning (yes, I am a student there), and even more are injured.  I never got to campus this morning, so I've been in my apartment with the doors shut all day.

WTF is going on!!!???  We've had 2 bomb threats in the past 2 weeks, and now this!  This is normally such a quiet little town!Angry

On an Italian papers website I read the casualties were 32. Micky lives in Virginia, but he hadn't yet heard about it... In any case, another terrible, utterly pointless tragedy. I really wonder why such things have to happen, but wondering won't change the reality of the facts. The world is a nasty place, nor is it getting any better.Cry

Oh, hey, didn't see this thread before I started my own.

I am a student at VT, but I never made it to campus this morning because my first class wasn't until 11.  They didn't actually close the university until about 9:30, even though the first shooting occurred at 7:15am.  It's absolute chaos around here, and not all of my friends have been accounted for.  All I can do is hope the rest are OK.

Horrific and tragic. A horrendous day for the families and friends of the victims. You'd think young people would be safe from harm in schools and universities.

Yep, just saw they upped it to 32 also.  Might be more before they sort it all out.  Why can't these nutjobs just off themselves first and let others go about their business?

Why, you ask?  The level of despair and unhappiness in this world of dog eat dog is very high.  Some of these people just end up, with the help of drugs, mental illness or an absence of giving a sh*t anymore, going over the edge.  The reasons are myriad and I don't ever see a tidy end to any of the atrocities people commit on each other.

guns, guns, guns, whatever.  That's a debate for a later day.

My question (which is more of a story) is this:

I woke up at 9am, when the first shooting had occurred at 7:15, and I received an email that said there had been a shooting in one of the dorms, but that class was to continue as scheduled.
I then went to get on the bus to go to class at about 9:45, and the bus driver pulled over and said class was cancelled and the buses are shut down.
At noon, we find out 22 people are dead.

There is a serious lapse in communication somewhere, and it seems it put many people's lives at risk.

I've changed the name of the thread then we dont get multiple threads all on the same topic.

Can we please be respectful, thanks.

A discussion about gun control can be started in a new thread but let's keep this one for general thoughts and reactions.

I'm a teacher in a high school, and I must confess that I can feel almost phisically that our society doesn't believe in youth. The best you can hear around is that young people cannot be understood, don't care about anything, and everybody's trying to sell them goods, ideologies, dopes, popstars. My colleagues and I try to give them the best things we can, our humanity, our (poor) culture, as seeds of things which could flourish in a better future. But most of all, we try just to listen. A cry shouldn't pass unheard.

Goldenspiral:  So are you saying that after the first shooting was found out, that buses still brought students to campus?  Just because yours got flagged at a fairly late time, doesn't mean others didn't get through.  There's your can of worms.

Well, Blacksburg ain't that big of a town.  between 9am and 9:45 a single bus probably made 2 trips between my apartment complex and campus.  I also checked email just before I left for the bus, and just after I came back there was a new message saying that class was cancelled.

Anyway, these are still questions for a later date I think, and I'm speaking out of anger and anxiety.  The fact remains that I still have at least one friend who is unaccounted for who had a class in the building where most of the shootings took place.  All I can do now is wait to find out what little information I can.

I'm still amazed that terrible things like this still happen.  I still remember Columbine from several years ago, then there was that shooting in Pennsylvania last year.  It's a tragedy that violence like this sometimes occurs, in schools of all places.  It's sad to think that people my age were just killed.  I'm really sorry for the family and friends of the students that died.  I hope all of your friends are alright, GoldenSpiral.
