A good guitarist with a unique style and sound. It was never a sound I was that keen on personally, but he was certainly original and instantly recognisable.

Didn't he make his own guitars??

Yeah, he made his out of a fireplace wood and made his own fretboard that fits his big hands. Oh I vote agree with Blacksword, except like his sound.

Technically rather good for his time, but his greatness is his unique style and sound of his own. Whenever you hear a Brian May solo you know that it's him who's playing, it's unmistakeable. Most modern guitar players sound all the same.

Gave 'Queen II' a spin late last night. Damn fine album. That was always my favourite Queen offering. Mays performance is very good on this album. I like effect he gets on 'Procession'

One of the greatest. He's quite "low profile", but he had a huge effect on any guitarist that came after him ... it's hard to ignore the riffing on Bohemian Rhapsody, or the brilliantly designed solos on tracks like We Will Rock You. Even some extreme metal bands are influenced by Queen ... Between the Buried and Me recently released a cover album which included Bicycle Race, and the Metallica version of Stone Cold Crazy really rocks!

I voted for the second option.
May is undoubtedly a fine player, and he has influenced many other guitarists.
I wouldn't put him in my top ten, possibly in my top twenty though.
And a nice chap as well, apparently. Wink

im not going to be conservative about my vote. one of the greatest of all time for sure. he had one of the freshest and most powerful sounding styles of any guitarist ever. he created a sound both completely recognizable and inspiring.

Well if you exclude primarily blues players like Clapton and Vaughan, and primarily fusion players like Holdsworth and Di Meola, I think May would likely make the top ten. I stand by it.
