From Greg Bendian:
Hello Everyone, Thought some of you might be interested in our new release. Happy New Year! Gregg B. "RETURN TO THE EMERALD BEYOND" NOW ON SALE! The Mahavishnu Project's new release on Cuneiform Records features a journey back to Mahavishnu's classic 1975 album, "Visions of the Emerald Beyond". "Return To The Emerald Beyond" shows The Mahavishnu Project once again going all-out and in-depth as they jam, expand and explore on all of the songs from "Visions", with three bonus tracks, including "Smile of the Beyond". "Return To The Emerald Beyond" is a double disc with almost two hours of music, featuring an expanded 11-piece band recorded live during the summer of 2006, and includes a deluxe 8-page booklet with lots of photos and a new essay by Gregg Bendian. For audio excerpts and ordering info, go to: _http://mahavishnupr oject.com/ html/rtteb. html_ (http://mahavishnupr oject.com/ html/rtteb. html) "What is primary to me is that they are all great musicians. Everyone has to be a good improviser. It's not enough to transcribe the tunes themselves. You have to be able to take them to another place... These guys can get there." - Jan Hammer "...they grab the bar the original Mahavishnu set during its 1971-'74 peak and raise it a notch. There's a truly amazing level of musicianship at play here, balancing focus, intensity and freedom..." - The Boston Phoenix "...an exciting document of inspiration and exploration. .." - Rolling Stone |

Those who have heard the album are suggesting former Miles Davis sidesman Adam Holzman has done a marvellous job reinterpreting the keyboard parts, and now gives them a Jan Hammer feel - note Hammer wasn't on the original.

Heath, I want to say thanks for bringing this new release to my attention. I will most certainly look into the Mahavishnu Project, often these jazz fusion recreations turn out well.

MP's first two albums (both live) were very well received, enough for former members of Mahavishnu Orchestra to turn up at their gigs. Jan Hammer and John McLaughlin fully approved the Project, to the point that Jan Hammer used the Project as his backing band for a New York gig last July covering the music of Hammer's 1976 album Oh Yeah!, from which a DVD recording is expected. When you have the likes of former Miles Davis keyboardist Adam Holzman on board, then you must expect quality and originality - btw early reviews suggest Holzman's keys are excellent.

I'd heard of the Mahavishnu Project, and knew they'd been "approved" by J McG and others, but hadn't appreciated that they had done albums - will have to give them a try! Thanks Dick.
