I missed this by one day,but am going to post anyway.5 years ago on December 13,2001 the metal community lost a true innovator when Chuck Schuldiner of Death passed away at the age of 34 from brain stem cancer.

RIP Chuck, you are gone but the music you gave us will live forever.

I was reading about him today and didn't know about the partially completed second Control Denied album. There is currently a legal battle over the rights to it,I didn't even know of it's existence.

Another sad thing is that his particular type of cancer was misdiagnosed. After his tumor was removed it returned again after 2 years and he needed immediate surgery but was denied due to lack of funds. That is so disgusting it literally makes me feel ill, when money is more important than human life.

ClapCouldn't have said it better myself. We were robbed WAY to early of what I believe to be a genius in metal, and music period for that matter. You are sorely missed Chuck.

I did not know Chuck Schuldiner, but through his lyrics and music I believe I have come to know his thoughts and feelings.
There are very few musicians I have been moved by their music like this (Human in particular).

I follow from time to time the EmptyWords website which is a tribute site to Chuck, and his mom sends there her messages every once in a while.  It also tells the tale of the "second" Control Denied album. What goes on there is one of the things Chuck referred to in his lyrics and booklet notes.
It is a nice website with many anekdotes and interviews and reviews about Chuck and his music (whether in Death or Control Denied).

There is one note I will never forget he wrote in the booklet of Human -
"This is more than a record to me. It is a statement, it is revenge." (I believe those are the exact words).
His moto in those booklets was - Support the music, not rummors.

I am hardly a sentimental man, but with a few, and Chuck is among them, I truly feel deep sorrow about his departing. Not Just because of his music, but also because how I came to see him through his interviews and albums.

That is a great website,I like it that his Mom is keeping his legacy alive.

Despite having a reputation as being difficult to work with(most geniuses are,he was admittedly a perfectionist),I have never read one bad thing about him.It seems like he was a really good person, with a great character and personality.

I don't care much for this kind of music, but the fact that fans and even magazines were trying to collect the money for his operation says something about who and how he was I guess.  It's always sad to see a good musician, or any good human, go...

R.I.P. Chuck. I have a deep admiration for any band or person who pioneers a genre, and Chuck did it almost by himself, the band simply fulfilled his vision. All of his albums contain superb musicianship. Steve DiGiorgio, Sean Reinert, Gene Hoglan, all heroes of extreme metal contributed to Death's legacy.

I can also relate to Death on an emotional level. However, to me the songs on the last Death album are most intense on that level.

Same here. I love everything the band released from Human onwards, but TSoP has managed (and still does, after years of repeated listening) to bring me to tears of joy and sadness alike. In the liner notes for the album Chuck wrote "To anyone with a dream, this album is for you". I go back to that thought when listening to their work and it always inspires me and fills me with a sense of joy and appreciation.
I had forgotten about the 13th of December... Actually yesterday I wore a T-shirt with his "support music not rumours" quote printed on the back all day and I'm glad I did, even if I only remembered today.
Interviews with him that I 've read revealed him as a kind and humble man, with a great love for music and striving to make a significant artistic statement - this was his dream. I think he achieved it more than on one occasion and his albums are living legacy. I only hope his spirit is at peace, with help from the prayers of those of us who know and love his work.

Terrible loss for all metal fans.  It seems like it's been so long.

A true innovator. Death's style of Death Metal  was unique and creative.... Chuck's playing was excellent and, above all, with no compromises....He gave us his best so what we can do is say:

Death won't kill the music of Death

Death came too early for Schuldiner, but his DEATH couldn't have come any earlier.

Thank You for DEATH... always will be remembered.
