I don't expect you'll get many answers other than Gabriel. He's my favorite songwriter, and tied with Robert Plant as my favorite Singer.

Gotta be the Man, Gabriel! Great lyricist/singer/writer/performer/artist/conceptualist, and he has done much for world music (and the third world), besides, appre-Genesis. "Biko" and "Wallflower" alone have earned PG my undying respect as a caring human being who tries to make a difference.
Hackett next.
Then Banks, Rutherford, Collins.
(For the rcord, I don't hate PC. Times/people/things change, & I doubt if Rutherford & Banks had any guns held to their heads on the way to the bank....)

Gabriel/Hackett, a tie.
Gabriel is the best vocalist (Not te best voice though) and an outstanding lyricist.
Steve is pure talent and the most faithful to prog'.

I chose Hackett. The guitar is the best singer in any band.

Thinking independently again, hey? That does it -- one rusty, raspy flute up the chute, comin' right up!
Ooh!

PG for me. The guy was simply a great artist. The lyrics, the singing, the theatrics...they all helped to MAKE Genesis what it was - Prog's greatest!

Phil Collins
He's the only one I know apart from Peter Gabriel, but I've never heard any Genesis with Gabriel.

Hackett should have been my choice, but I HAD to choose Tony. HE has always been the main musical force behind Genesis.

I went for Tony Banks. It was either him or Peter Gabriel, Banks got my vote as I have always considered him the musical core of the band, with or without Gabriel at the helm.

Tony Banks got my vote. Genesis wouldn't be Genesis without him, I'm sure.

For sheer consistent brilliance over the last 30 years as a singer, songwriter, performer and all round good guy, it has to be Mr G.
But then again...... he doesn't play the keyboards that frequently reduce me to a quivering wreck...
But then again...... he doesn't play that guitar!
But then again...... he can't play a 4/12 string double neck, play Moog Taurus bass pedals, sing, and watch the rest of the band at the same time.
But then again...... he can't play the kind of drums that make me air-drum until my arms ache (or turn one of my favorite bands into a sub-motown outfit Grrr).
Damn you Sweetnighter, how's a guy supposed to decide?!?

Oh that reminds me, Peter - Mr Gabriel wants to borrow your flute.
Ah!
Perhaps not, then.........

Valarius - you MUST hear some Gabriel-era Genesis! They're one of Prog's greats and are continually lauded by some to be THE great. Download The Musical Box & In The Cage from the archives...they are marvellous
