There are A LOT of prog releases in DVD form, making this format indispensable.
Pioneer is definetly the brand which is the most advanced in this domain.
The good news is that even their ridiculous price (less than 100€) entry-level DVD players already feature excellent image quality.
The big weakness of DVD players is the sound, but Pioneer manage to make decent sounding entry-level players.
The higher you go in the range, the best the sound and image will be, until their top-level models.
Most users will use the Peritel link, whereas S-VHS is the top.
A huge and cheap upgrade in image and sound would be a « Monster cable » quality Peritel cable.
While this brand is not recommened for audio links, they do quality affordable Peritel cables (around 40/50€).
For those who want to use the external RCA output from their DVD players to link to their amp or preamp, a cheap and musical modulation cable remains the QED models, such as the « Qnex1 », « Qnex2 », « Qnex3 » models.
Another huge and cheap image/sound upgrade for the DVD player is a quality power cable, such as an
« Eupen » (european market only).

This is my setup:
- PC - Windows XP MCE 2005
- DVD drive in the PC
- Excellent sound card (Creative X-Fi - LG 32" LCD TV, connected to the PC via VGA connection, using the native resolution of the display (1360x768) - Nvidia PureDVD software decoder (capable of decoding dts and Dolby Digital)
It's very nice for watching DVDs ... the image quality is great, as there is no cable required to transfer the decoded image to the TV.

100% agree, Ollie - Pioneer are the best!
But I thought that "component" connectors were the best (around €100 a shot)?

Yes, Pioneer have killer engineers!
What do you mean by that:
"But I thought that "component" connectors were the best (around €100 a shot)? "

Still I think that a VGA connection is better than any expensive video cable ... it can only be beaten by a digital DVI connection. After all, DVD is a digital source, and to convert it to analog and transfer it through a cable which was designed for lower resolutions is not exactly ideal ...

€800...
...for a cable.
Hello, hello - earth calling - can we have a reality check here, please?
OK - if I've read this correctly, someone's paid €800 for a cable; can someone please tell me whether such an item is actually worth €800? If I had nothing better to do with €800 than buy a cable, it would be framed on the wall with a huge neon arrow pointing to it.

This 800€ cable makes your 1000€ device works like
a 2000€ one.
I don't dare to tell you about 3000€ power cables...
They are used by the best studio...i've personally heard some and it's really amazing how it boost a system. Just one on the preamp and the system explodes!! A full line is beyond words...
My own ones are:
-Speakers cables: "Esoteric audio" 150€/meter (X 3 cause i'm in bi wiring with double cable in the low)
-Modulation interconect: "Esoteric audio" 700€/meter with WBT Topline interconnects.
-Power cables Only 60€ meter, but i'm about to upgrade to 300€/meter (little) "Transparent" ones.
I know an audiophile who has maybe the best system in the country, he owns for more than 300 000€ of cables, including 30 000€ Transparent speakers cables reference, and the guy is in bi-cabling, so you can mulltipy by two
"Transparent cables" speaker cables "Reference"
It includes filtering boxes, so these cables are not passive.

Component cables; http://www.futureshop.co.uk/component-video-c-72.html
DVD stores a component video signal in digital format. Since this is the native video format that is stored on DVD, this is also the best format to use to display the picture, if your equipment is capable of dealing with this type of signal.

An entry level Pioneer only costs 90€...and it already features an excellent image and a decent sound for such a little player.

Transparent cable Premium S Video
"Two separately triple shielded members effectively isolate color and brightness from each other and keep these signals free from outside interference. Low loss, low noise, heavy gauge conductors work extremely well in distances longer than 2 meters. Use this cable in the finest S-Video installations."

The main features for me when shearching a player in excess of the price, was the option to skip region codes + ability to watch mpgs, avis and such. I quess the avi options are included with majority of players, but when I browsed the players few years ago, majority of the players supported only area code 2 or 0. This is the most stupides aspect of DVD industry IMO.
