I start the November new additions with two hot new releases, one jazz and the other fusion:

ALLEN, GERI ~ TIMELESS PORTRAITS AND DREAMS

Recorded: 2006 Released: 2006
Every new release by Geri Allen is always a source of joy and this one does not disappoint as well. Allen's delicate lyricism (often resembling Bill Evans) and fantastic technique go hand in hand with her highly developed sense of melody, producing jazz which is both melodic and intellectual. This album is quite different from her previous releases, as in addition to the piano trio format (here with veterans Ron Carter - bass and Jimmy Cobb - drums) Allen uses several guests, including Wallace Roney on trumpet, two vocalist and even a chorus. The reason for the presence of the vocalist becomes apparent when one realizes that Geri re-visits the gospel roots of jazz and brings them up to date as an integral part of her musical landscape. The performances are of course brilliant, as usual in her case, and the sound quality staggering (kudos to Telarc again). I loved every moment of this and I'm pretty sure every serious jazz connoisseur will join me here.

STERN, MIKE ~ WHO LET THE CATS OUT?

One of the pioneers of Fusion, Mike Stern ranks this day among the best guitar players. Throughout his illustrious career, since his Miles Davis days and up to now, Stern released a long series of excellent solo album (this is his 15th release as a leader) and was very prolific as a sidemen taking part in hundreds of projects. His playing always borders elegantly between Fusion and Jazz, occasionally emphasizing one genre or another. This album presents a perfect mixture of both genres and includes players from both genres as well, such as Roy Hargrove - trumpet, Chris Minh Doky - bass, Dave Weckl - drums, Anthony Jackson - bass and many others. Stern wrote all the music and plays some mighty guitar here, with traces of Pat Metheny sound, but overall quite original and technically brilliant. This is a true fun album and I wholeheartedly recommend it to all fusion-heads.

Two new Prog releases on the excellent French Musea label added today:

MOVING GELATINE PLATES ~ REMOVING
MUSEA 4663 (Barcode: 3426300046635) ~ FRANCE ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 2006 Released: 2006
The excellent French Prog group Moving Gelatine Plates recorded two albums in the early 1970s and a reunion album in 1980 (all 3 albums are included on the two reissue albums available on Musea) and then disappeared from the scene like most early groups. Almost 30 years later they reunited again and recorded this album, which of course created quite a buzz in the Prog community. Rather than trying to recreate their original style, the new album is quite different in most respects, except for the beautiful 1970s (retro) sound. In fact the albums sounds remarkably Canterbury, somewhere between Soft Machine and Caravan, and if I didn't know the group I'd have been absolutely convinced that it is British. They also introduced some vocals (on 3 songs only) whereas previously their material was purely instrumental. The music is relaxed and very melodic, with strong jazzy undertones and plenty of great solos by the band members. All the music was composed by the group's two founding members and is remarkably strong. In short this album should appeal to most Prog lovers, not only those who are familiar with the band's original output.

SCARLET THREAD ~ VALHEISTA KAUNEIN
MUSEA 4670 (Barcode: 3426300046703) ~ FINLAND ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 2005 Released: 2006
2nd album by the excellent Finnish Prog band Scarlet Thread. As everybody knows, I have a real soft spot for Finnish music, therefore every new album from the Nordic shores is always a source of excitement, especially when it is as good as this one. The group includes two guitar players, who provide the rocky parts, but basically they are heavily influences by ethnic motifs, which makes them as much a folk-rock ensemble as a Prog group (in fact I was hesitant how categorize them by genre). The usual keyboards spot is occupied by a violin player and they also use guest flute players, creating a much softer sound than one might expect form a group fronted by two guitarists. The tracks which include the flute are remarkably similar to some early Jethro Tull pieces (mind you associatively only). The folk inspired melodies are enchanting and provide a great vehicle for instrumental solos. Definitely worth serious investigation, especially for more folk-inspired Progheads.

Another Musea new release added today, which is quite excellent:

LU7 ~ EFFLORESCENCE
MUSEA 4638 ~ JAPAN ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 2002 - 2006 Released: 2006
1st album by one of the hottest new Japanese instrumental Prog ensembles, which is basically a duo of Luna Umegaki - keyboards and Tsutomu Kurihara - guitar, with occasional guest musicians. Both players are superb instrumentalists and gifted composers and the album is a true delight from start to finish. The music is melodic, but has enough internal tension to sustain interest. There is a strong jazzy feel and the album could be classified as fusion, but since the emphasis is more on the melody than on the rhythmic patterns, I decided to stick with Prog. The guitarist is influenced by Metheny and Holdsworth, but has a definite personal sound and style. Guitar freaks will delight in his explorations. The (female) keyboards player provides most of the multi-layered sounds, which are elegant and imaginative. Her solos are mostly done on acoustic piano, which sounds excellent on top of the synthesized background. In short a great surprise and a superb debut album by all standards. One bonus track was added to the original Japanese album for the Musea release.

3rd album, which pretty much continued what the previous albums were leading to, with more interpretations of music composed by others, especially the beautiful Tim Hardin`s `Hang On To A Dream`, as well as music composed by Emerson. Emerson`s playing is masterly and he switches between classical piano and organ with ease and ellegance. There is never a dull moment for the listener here and with the added bonus tracks this is a splendid document of the band at its peak.

One new Israeli (well not entirely) album added today by the experimental band Kruzenshtern & Parohod, which is always a great event:

AURIS 011 (Barcode: 7290011216115) ~ ISRAEL ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 2005 - 2006 Released: 2006
This is a shared release by two of the most interesting experimental / RIO ensembles: the Israeli group Kruzenshtern & Parohod (4 tracks) and the French duo Vialka (5 tracks). As these musicians share the musical direction and also perform and tour together, this cooperative release is quite natural in their case. Vialka are a guitar / drums duo, playing music somewhere left of Magma and resembling (mainly because of the use of vocals) some earlier French and UK RIO groups. The fact that they are only a duo makes their music even more amazing, since they sound as a full ensemble and their music is complete and utterly overwhelming. Kruzenshtern & Parohod are basically a trio, but here add an accordion player to extend the scope of the overall sound. Their amazing mixture of rock, jazz, klezmer music and humor is surely some of the best stuff in circulation today and I am pretty surprised they are not as worldwide known, as they deserve to be. Well good music never is, as we all know. This is music for the adventurous listeners, who are afraid of nothing and appreciate the unexpected.

One album added today, but a most significant one, or as it is customary to say this days a "Mother Of All Albums" ;)

MAYALL, JOHN ~ BLUESBREAKERS WITH ERIC CLAPTON (DELUXE EDITION)
DECCA 984180 (Barcode: 602498418017) ~ UK ~ Blues
Recorded: 1965 - 1966 Released: 2006
2nd album by Mayall and his Bluesbreakers, which features Eric "Slowhand" Clapton as the lead guitarist and sadly the only album they recorded together at the time. Of course this is the definitive white blues album of all times, with an incisive impact not only on Clapton's stairway to the "Godly" status of Emperor of all guitar players, but also on the entire music scene, basically establishing the electric Blues (and later Blues / Rock) as the natural and legitimate next step from American-born acoustic blues. This album influenced (and still influences) generations of guitar players of all genres and changed the face of music probably more than any single album did beforehand. It is pretty ironic (at least in retrospect) that Clapton left the Yardbirds, accusing the band of becoming to "commercial" following the release of the "For Your Love" single (which by the way was quite revolutionary and groundbreaking as it is), to pursue a "pure" blues oriented music with Mayall's Bluesbreakers, only to leave a few month later to form Cream, which became one of the most successful Rock bands in history. Life is full of surprises! Nevertheless during his stint with Mayall, Clapton managed single-handedly to shape the future of Rock, producing some of the most memorable sounds ever. Speaking of sound, Clapton's US-made Gibson Les Paul combined with the British Marshall amplifiers produced a sound so unique that it was to be imitated by hordes of axe players around the world for decades. Of course Clapton's feel for the blues is undeniable, and his interpretation of the twelve bar music form, mixed with his rock background, created an embryo of a new musical Hydra. Mayall was of course ecstatic to have Clapton in his band, only to be utterly devastated when Clapton announced his departure soon after this album was recorded. Fortunately Mayall soon recovered and followed suit with another guitar hero - Peter Green. This (long overdue) edition of this groundbreaking album collects virtually absolutely everything Mayall and Clapton managed to record together. The First CD includes both the original mono mix of the album and the stereo mix, which was done only three years later (1969). The second CD includes a plethora of singles, outtakes, BBC sessions and live recordings, many of which see the light of day for the first time. I am not a great fun of the "If you had to select only one single album." idea, but this one does come as close to the idea as it is humanly possible. If you don't own this album, this probably is the greatest hole in your collection (not to mention your music education). Hopefully not for long.

Another recent Jethro Tull remaster added today. The JT discography on my site is now nearly complete ;)

JETHRO TULL ~ ROCK ISLAND
CHRYSALIS 370976 (Barcode: 094637097625) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1989 Released: 2006
18th album by JT and the last one recorded in the 1980s, their 3rd decade in the Rock trenches. The album's title refers both to Anderson's then current home on the Isle Of Skye (off the coast of Scotland) and the music, which comes back to the "hard-rock" side of the band, with the guitar up front rather than Anderson's flute. There are a few quieter, more lyrical moments, but overall the music is rocky and dynamic. The band is a quartet with the excellent Martin Barre on guitar, veteran David Pegg on bass and Doane Perry on drums. A couple of guest keyboards players are added on some of the tunes. By the time this album was released JT lost most of their status among the critics, who accused Anderson of carrying on with his band based on solely on the inertia acquired in their past. Hearing the album now proves that nothing could be further from the truth, as the music they created was constantly developing and masterly performed, with very little competition from their contemporaries. If fact it is pretty amazing (and commendable) that Anderson managed to keep up his high standards while surrounded by oceans of mediocrity that dominated the music scene at the time. The bonus tracks include some live material recorded in Zurich during a JT tour at the time. No JT fan and collector will skip this album, as it is just another JT gem.

Another Jethro Tull remaster added today, what a joy ;)

JETHRO TULL ~ CATFISH RISING

Recorded: 1987 - 1991 Released: 2006
19th album by JT and the first one recorded in the 1990s, their 4th decade in the Rock trenches. By general consensus (even the critics) this is JT's strongest album since their glory days of the 1970s. In the new liner notes of the reissue Anderson says that this album "is probably the most Blues-influenced album since the 1968 This Was record". And so it is, a splendid example of Blues / Rock, with almost no folk or classical influences. The lineup is the same as on the predecessor - a quartet with the excellent Martin Barre on guitar, veteran David Pegg on bass and Doane Perry on drums and three guest keyboards players, including Andrew Giddings who later was to join the on a permanent basis. Anderson managed to come up with some superbly crafted tunes and the album has a beautiful natural flow to it. In short, JT entered the 1990s with a bang, proving again that old heroes still have a trick or two hidden in their sleeves. The bonus tracks include a studio takeout and a live track recorded in 1987. For all JT fans this is of course a must and if you are not familiar with the album, do yourself a favor and check it out.

One new Israeli album added today - always a great pleasue for me to see the local scene flourishing:

HUMPHREY`S SISPENCE ~ DICTIONARY OF THE SOUL PART 1
HAARMONIC TREE 01 (Barcode: 7891098010421) ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz-World Fusion
Recorded: 2006 Released: 2006
This is surely one of the most unusual and unexpected albums released in Israel. Humphrey's Sispence are a trio consisting of Brazilian-born singer and lyricist Monica Estela and brothers Yossef (guitar and compositions) and Tamir (bass and production) Sviri. For the album they expanded the lineup to include several young Israeli jazz players, among them the excellent trumpeter Avishai Cohen (not to be mistaken for the other Avishai Cohen, who plays bass). Monica is quite a multi-talented lady with established credentials as a photographer, filmmaker and poet. The album is based on a poetry book she wrote, in which there is a poem for every letter in the alphabet and each poem includes (almost exclusively) words starting with that letter - quite clever really, but unfortunately for most of us all in Portuguese. The music is very different as well, a mixture of jazz, Brazilian jazz, lounge and acid jazz, but as usually labels are not adequate to describe it and listening is the only option. Monica's expressive vocals are the focus of the music, which floats around them, creating an atmosphere of tension almost like a soundtrack for a thriller movie. All this is very unusual and strange at first, but gets under your skin and stays there. The younger generation of jazz fans will love this to bits; especially those exposed to modern European jazz. Since this album includes only the first half of the alphabet's letters, the rest will appear on Part 2 - hopefully soon. This is an excellent example of how diverse the Israeli music scene is in the new Millenium. Warmly recommended!

Following the fantastic Concerts, I added today the final missing link in the Henry Cow discography:

SLAPP HAPPY / HENRY COW ~ DESPERATE STRAIGHTS

Recorded: 1975 Released: 2004
The two groups, Slapp Happy and Henry Cow had a lot in common: both were avant-garde and ahead of their time musically and both shared the same social / political agenda. Slapp Happy consisted of the German singer Dagmar Krause, British pianist Anthony Moore and American guitarist Peter Blegvad. The band released their debut album (recorded with the participation of members from the legendary Krautrock band Faust) on Polydor in 1972, but when the rebel rejected their next album, they moved to Virgin, which at the time was pretty open to experimental music, and re-recorded the album, which was released in 1974. Since Virgin was the home label for Henry Cow, the bands soon met and started to cooperate and eventually record together, becoming de-facto one group. In fact Slapp Happy and Henry Cow recorded two albums together: this one and In Praise Of Learning, with the latter appearing under Henry Cow's moniker only. Following the second album, Moore and Blegvad left the band, but Krause remained as the band's singer till their demise. It is interesting to compare the two albums, as they are quite different even though the band is identical. Desperate Straights is almost a straightforward songs album, with 13 relatively short tracks, whereas In Praise Of Learning is highly adventurous and avant-garde oriented. Nevertheless this is a brilliant example of the early RIO movement and in time reached a classic status with the music remaining fresh and visionary forever. A must for all Henry Cow fans and RIO followers.

Today I added the finally available and long overdue remaster of a RIO classic:

PICCHIO DAL POZZO ~ ABBIAMO TUTTI I SUOI PROBLEMI
RER PDP (Barcode: 752725022620) ~ ITALY ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1980 Released: 2006
2nd album by the Italian RIO group considered a masterpiece of the genre. The music, although sounding improvised, was completely composed and includes elements of contemporary classical music, jazz phrasing and rock influences (Zappa and Canterbury among others). Of course at the time of its release the album was aeons ahead of time and sounds today as fresh and innovative as it did then and most probably will in the future as well. The group uses extensive brass arrangements in addition to the basic drums / bass / keyboards / guitar instrumentation, full of twists and turns, tempo changes, etc. It is truly superfluous to write more about this music, it simply deserves to be heard by every Prog and beyond music lover. An essential classic stuff!

The one-before-last Peter Hammill remaster added today - one more to go:

HAMMILL, PETER ~ A BLACK BOX
VIRGIN 370518 (Barcode: 094637051825) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1979 - 1980 Released: 2006
9th album and the last to be released on the Charisma label (well not really, as it was first released on Hammill's independent label and only later licensed back to his old label). It is also the first "real" solo album, as by the time it was recorded VDGG were no more. The only link to his band is saxophonist David Jackson present on one song only. All the rest of the music is played solely by Hammill, which of course makes this a truly personal statement. The work on this album took quite a while and he included here songs he has been working on for quite a while, which were postponed due to the VDGG usual havoc. Now free of any other obligations, Hammill was able to concentrate on his solo work. The music and the texts are as usual deeply expressive and personal, culminating in the multi-part 19+ minutes suite, which was side B of the original LP. In many respects this albums marks the end of en era, for Hammill and music in general, with the golden 1970s behind and the dreary 1980s ahead. From now on Hammill will be releasing his albums on his own label, affirming his independence as an artist. For Hammill and VDGG fans this is a must.

Here comes the LAST Peter Hammill remaster, which means that all 9 of his Charisma beautifully remastered releases are now here - what a joy!

HAMMILL, PETER ~ IN CAMERA
VIRGIN 370512 (Barcode: 094637051221) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1973 - 1974 Released: 2006
4th album by Hammill, who was then still living a double life both as the VDGG leader and a solo artist. The band members accompany him here as on all the early albums, but the music is quite different from the band's material, surely more personal and poetic. A balanced mixture of up-tempo numbers and slow introvert songs makes this a most pleasant listening experience, especially in view of how well Hammill's material ages, being completely relevant today as much as it was at the time of its release. It is quite apparent when listening to the album that Hammill was an extraordinary music maker, with completely unique palette of sounds and a personal thesaurus. In addition he was also remarkably prolific recording more that one album a year, something he continued to do for many years to come. Getting into Hammill's music can take time, but I recommend the effort (is one is necessary), as the rewards are worth it. For VDGG and Hammill fans this is of course a must.

The fantastic new IQ DVD added today:

Following the release of the brilliant Dark Matter album, IQ embarked on a world tour to play concerts supporting the album's release. This DVD set documents two such concerts, recorded just a week apart in July 2005: DVD 1 was filmed at the Nearfest Festival (USA) and DVD 2 at the Burg Herzberg Festival (Germany). It is quite fascinating to compare these two concerts and witness how much the audience and the ambience of the place effect the musicians. Nearfest is often stone cold, especially towards European groups, being a gathering of the US Prog fans, some of which are notoriously suspicious of everything non-American. Burg Herzberg is a completely opposite gathering of European freaks and freethinkers, who are there as much for the music as for the outdoor fun. The two IQ performances match the two venues perfectly: the Nearfest concert is stone-cold, technically perfect delivery of most of the Dark Matter material with a few older songs re-arranged; the Burg Herzberg concert is much more relaxed, with a have-fun and please the crowd attitude in mind, where both the musicians and the public seem to have a blast. In addition to both concerts there is (as usual) plenty of bonus material and features. Well over 4 hours with the best UK Prog band should be quite satisfactory for the numerous fans. I had a great time watching this! Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound, 260 minutes.

One classic item added today, this one somehow slipped my net earlier:

COLOSSEUM ~ DAUGHTER OF TIME (EXPANDED EDITION)
SANCTUARY 119 (Barcode: 5050749211927) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1970 Released: 2004
3rd album by this superb group. By the time this one was recorded Clem Clemson (guitar), Mark Clarke (bass) and Chris Farlowe (vocals) joined the core of the band - Jon Hiseman (drums), Dick Heckstall-Smith (saxes) and Dave Greenslade (keyboards) - giving it a much more distinctive blues feel in addition to the jazz / rock elements already present. These six musicians had so much talent and ability between them that they could outplay any of their contemporaries with their hands tied behind their backs. This album contains some brilliant compositions (including the classic Jack Bruce song Theme For An Imaginary Western, which gets an outstanding treatment here) and excellent performances, shadowed only by the live versions, which are present on the next album. This is a Prog classic which only gets better in time.

Today I start the next wave of the Patrick Moraz remasters, which many of you are eagerly expecting:

MORAZ, PATRICK ~ TIMECODE
TIME WAVE 007 (Barcode: 604388670123) ~ SWITZERLAND ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1984 Released: 2006
5th album by Moraz heavily influenced by then contemporary New Wave pop. It is the only Moraz album consisting almost completely of songs (i.e. with lyrics) rather than his mostly instrumental pieces on his earlier (and later) albums and therefore considered his most pop oriented release. Of course it much depends on one's definition of pop, since his compositions are definitely more complex than your average pop song. In addition to John McBurnie who handles most of the vocal parts (sounding very much like Jon Anderson BTW), several guest vocalist take part as well. Bill Bruford guests on one track on electronic drums (Bill and Patrick recorded two excellent jazz oriented albums as a duo around that time). Patrick's keyboards wizardry is omnipresent here and not to be ignored or dismissed. For his many fans this album is a nice trip down the memory lane.

TIME WAVE 008 (Barcode: 604388670222) ~ SWITZERLAND ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1979 Released: 2006
6th album by Moraz recorded live during a TV solo concert and based on the concept of spontaneous composition / improvisation. Moraz plays a series of lengthy composition, starting with a couple of acoustic piano pieces and then moving to electronic keyboards gradually building up the array of the instruments he uses, including percussion and gongs. It is difficult to believe that all this music is performed by one musician and recorded live, but no overdubbing whatsoever is used. Moraz seems to have a lot of fun here and the results are truly amazing. His wizardry as a player and compositional skills are evident and this is one of his strongest solo projects. Another album based on the same concept and setup was recorded four years later, called Future Memories II. No Moraz fan will want to miss this one.

Recorded: 1982 Released: 2006
7th album by Moraz, which documents his second solo show for the Swiss TV. The concept is quite similar to the previous album, with Moraz improvising on the spot and using an incredible array of keyboard instruments. No acoustic piano pieces this time, but Moraz clearly shows his masterly playing and compositional skills, sounding like a one-man orchestra. The show was recorded over the period of several days and the album includes a selection of the material recorded. A companion DVD (Future Memories 1 & 2) presents a full document of these sessions. The music was quite innovative at the time and includes many technological tricks of the trade (like voice samples), which were incorporated into the mainline of the industry only years later. For the many Patrick Moraz fans this is a must have, especially in view of the fact that this material was unavailable for many years.

A recent reissue of a great Blues / Rock album added today:

Recorded: 1998 Released: 2006
This is a reissue of Snowy White's little known album, which never gained the recognition it deserved. Recorded with his White Flames trio, a group White fronted for several years since the mid-1990's, it is a superb example of Blues / Rock. White's incredible guitar playing and his soulful voice comprise an ideal vehicle for this type of music and the band plays extremely well together. Add to this White's great talent to compose those heartbreaking bluesy melodies and you have all it takes to make a most enjoyable album. This should appeal to a wide range of listeners from classic rock to blues, each and every one finding everything they like in this music. I'm glad to see this album available again.

Recorded: 1996 Released: 2006
This is a reissue of Snowy White's first album with his excellent White Flames trio, with some help from other musician friends (including John "Rabbit" Bundwick on keyboards). A superb example of Blues / Rock, where White's incredible guitar playing and his soulful voice comprise an ideal vehicle for this type of music. White wrote all the music on this album and his love for the blues form is evident. Guitar freaks will of course enjoy White's long guitar solos, but the material is generally very strong and the entire album is a most pleasant listen. It is great to have this album back in circulation, especially in view of the very limited exposure it received when originally released. Warmly recommended.
