i'm already counting and i'm amazed how many of my favourite vocalists come from prog, though i first thought they should all come from striaght rock, pop and other non-prog genres.

my favourites are gilmour-waters-wright (each in it's own way), greg lake, ian, jon; i haven't yet seriously listened Genesis, so i can't say anything about gabriel. so, i'm into classics.

btw thirdeye, are you sure this thread hasn't been already done?

Greg Lake?

Much though I admire both Andersons, I believe that the variety, the wit and the vocal power of Peter G. on THE LAMB have never been surpassed.

quite possibly been done to death actually LOL

But just to be on the constructive side here, I will mention one vocalist that I'm sure will get by unnoticed, albeit far from being the greatest [nobody is]: Frank Zappa. Everybody acknowledges his gift in terms of composition and guitar, but what about his voice? Sure, you won't see him get emotional and you won't hear breathtaking harmonies, but could this guy deliver! He definately had one of the most distinctive voice and knew how to tell a story, whenever he felt like singing that story.

Again, nobody is the greatest vocalist of prog, but some are just unforgetable. Wink

Steve Walsh (in the seventies) and Ian Gillan.
Geof Tate and Fish in the eighties.

I see that nobody mentioned Bryan Ferry, John Wetton, Fish (although he's a Gabriel clone) and of course Ian Gillan and David Coverdale.

Still I have to agree with Asphalt, Zappa was a great singer (among other things) due to his rare sense of twisted humour. From his court Captain Beefheart is also worth mentioning.

As for pure prog Ian and Jon Anderson and Peter Gabriel are by far the holy trinity

Greg Lake has a brilliant voice, so does Heather Findlay.

But my vote goes to all the members of Gentle Giant (but particularly Derek Shulman and Kerry Minnear) who can perform vocal feats like no other band.

Peter Gabriel for sure but lately I've become intrigued with Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree.

Broke this up into people who I consider to have range and emotion and then just emotion behind their vox (not necessarily limited to this silly Prog genre).  Like anything else, I have mixed feelings about the lot of them but here goes:

Singers I'ved liked for their range and emotion:  Daniel Gildenlow, Cedric Bixler-Zavala, Freddie Mercury, Hans Froberg, Geddy Lee, Mikael Akerfeldt, Peter Hammill, Francesco DiGiacomo, Demetrio Stratos, Bjork, Adrian Belew, Claudio Sanchez, Dolores O'Riordan, Devon Graves, Lisa Gerard, Alberto Piras, Mike Patton, Matthew Parmenter, Ray Weston & Bret Kull, Wayne Coyne, everyone in Gentle Giant, Brandon Boyd, Anthony Kiedis, Jerry Cantrell & Layne Staley, Kate Bush, Sarah McLachlan, Toby Driver, Doug Pinnick & Ty Tabor, Robert Plant, James Labrie, Meatloaf, Raine Maida, Sting, Prince, Dean Bowman, Jónsi Birgission, David Byrne, Tori Amos, and Maurice White...sure there's others I've forgotten consulting my itunes.

Singers I'ved like more for their emotion/personality (if that makes sense): Maynard James Keenan, Roine Stolt, Peter Gabriel, Fish, H., Adam Duritz, David Sylvian, Dave Matthews, Brendan Perry, Chino Moreno, Donald Fagen, Don Henley, Jim Morrison, Guy Garvey, Greg Lake, Nils Frykdahl, Fiona Apple, Frank Zappa, Imogen Heap, Anneke Van Giersbergen, Sean Albers, Dagmar Krause, Deborah Perry, Jarboe, Ian Anderson, John Wetton, Les Claypool, Marilyn Manson, Dave Mustaine, James Hetfield, Buzz Osbourne, Roger Waters & David Gilmour, Jens Kidman, Thom Yorke, Stephen Jenkins, Paul Meany, Nick Cave, Kevin Moore, Mike Vennart, Pertonella Nettermalm, Steven Wilson, Ben Gibbard, Michael Stipe, Zach de la Rocha, The Residents, Bryan Ferry, Michael Sadler, Billy Corgan, Chris Cornell, Scott Weiland, Sufjan Stevens, Roger Hodgson & Richard Davies, Serge Tankian, Mark Hollis, Andy Tillison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Tom Waits, and Jon Anderson...sure there's others I've forgotten consulting my itunes.

An all over the place list, but a nice little project I wasted some time this morning to put together...and will make for a nice cut-and paste response for a next time hah.
